I have a 80GB 7200rpm HD but its really slow. Takes along time to load windows. If i get a 74gb or 36gb raptor will that help me load faster. Will i be able to notice the difference?

I was able to notice a speed difference. My machine became much "snappier" after upgrading to a Raptor. Also moving large files across the network became faster as well.

Others will agree and others will disagree.

The Storage tab up above has an old aritcle "Raptors in RAID" a few pages back that gives timings for a single and pair of raptors.

One thing to check is whether there are a bunch of programs that are set to load automatically when Windows starts. The more of those you have, the slower it will start.

Check ( Start > All Programs > startup ) to look for programs like adobe reader and quicktime loading themselves, and if you find them there use Windows Explorer to delete them from the startup folders.

There are 2 startup folders:
Documents and Settings > All Users > Start Menu > programs > startup
Documents and Settings > (your name) > Start Menu > programs > startup

Don't delete the folder or "desktop.ini"

I notice a difference and I don't even have the 16MB version of the 74GB Raptor, so I would imagine the newer version of the Raptor is even faster.

I noticed a difference going from a 80GB SATA drive to the 36GB Raptor over a year ago. I got a 74GB 16MB cache drive back from RMA...can't wait to reinstall and see if it's even faster..

exactly, also if your drive is heavily fragmented it will slow down quite a bit too. i defrag my drives at least 1x weekly and the laptop my wife uses is the most heavily fragmented hdd all the time. it is about time i put the newest version of diskeeper on it and leave it on all the time.

on a side note, if all things are equal there is a difference between a 7200 rpm hdd and a 10k hdd and it is noticeable. how much that matters to you is, well up to you. since you can pick up a 320GB hdd or larger for the same price as a raptor you need to weigh the size vs speed. also, the raptors own 7200rpm only in seek times, but there are faster 7200rpm in the substained thoroughput dept.

with that said, personally i could never go back to a slower than 15k system hdd, but i don't buy scsi drives at retail prices so the price is not much of a concern because i always get excellent deals.
