Hi guys,
Just wanna ask since when i read reviews of the raptor harddrive they said it was very quiet. Well i own one know its its damn loud. Loudest harddrive i ever heard! Is mine faulty or are they really this loud?
Anyone that owns it can comment on this?

I tested these drives for http://www.amdtechtour.com and it was one of the quietest drives i've used. I've heard people complain about the noice, but I am currently using a 36GB and a 74GB, and both are very very quiet.

I have one of the first gen Raptors. They're not that loud, but there is a slight whine that's not present on drives with FDBs.

Try some old SCSI drives if you feel like torturing your ears. I think Seagate should have called their early 10k rpm drive the Banshee, not the Cheetah. :p

I got my Raptor about a month or so ago, and I don't find it that loud. Of course I'm kinda used to hearing LOUD case and system fans, so it might just be me :p However, I've got a new case along with the Raptor, and this case doesn't require the fans I had before, so my room is MUCH quieter than before, and I just don't hear the Raptor all that much. Just my 2cents :)

well mines inside a shuttle Sn95G5 so its not that solid and has many gaps for noise to come out. Plus the thing is about 1-2 feet away from my face. But man is it loud. I wish i knew someone that owned one so i can hear theres. I just find it wierd to be this loud and i know harddrives, after 2 years they get louder and louder. Im scared to find out how loud this thin will get then : )

I can't really hear mine, except when doing a lot of seeking such as when doing a virus scan, but I've had them for over a year, so I may just be used to them.

There's probably nothing wrong with them. Whether one considers them loud or not is completely subjective. Most of WD's newer drives make a high pitched whine which tends to increase over time. Any 10K RPM drive is going to make more noise than a 7200, no matter what the brand. That's just the way it is.

If they bother you that much, you should send them back if you can and try for a lower RPM drive, maybe from Seagate. 10K+ drives don't offer the average user much advantage. If you're running a server then you'll definitely need the faster drives.
