Raptor Decision...

Well guys,

I have a WD Raptor 36GB that I've been really disappointed with. I have not seen any tangible gains over my 120GB Maxtor. So, I'm left with two logical choices:

-buy another 36GB Raptor and RAID-0 them
-sell the Raptor I have and cut my losses

Which would you do in my situation? A new Raptor is totally within my budget, so that's not a problem. I'm pretty sure I would notice a very substantial boost in performance, but then again I thought the same thing before I bought the first Raptor.

Ideas?

buy another raptor and apply raid 0 mode on them. set the the card to 16k stripe.

format ntfs.

bench and you will get 101.0 mb/s of throughout put.

what controller card are you going to use.

I use promise fasttrack2plus 150, and i got 2x36 raptors in raid 0 mode.

Choose between needed space vs performance and go from there...74Gig in Raid0 ain't much nowadays!

The controller is a Silicon Image 3112.

I don't think I'll need more than 72GB for high speed stuff. Thanks for the input, guys. 🙂

Well, I think you'd notice as much of a difference and have more space for the future if you just got two large SATA drives (160, 200, or 250 GB) and RAID them.

Sell it raptors are the worst price/performance drives since SCSI. I don't know about you but I resent paying 200% more money for maybe 20% more performance as shown in anands revieiw of this drive.

Yah you guys are right. The thing is, every time I ship a HD to someone, it gets there with bad sectors. I live in Canada, and I think the customs people run some X-rays through the things that can cause problems. Soooo...selling it will be difficult unless I can find a Canuck.

Hi.

I currently have 2 x74GB Raptors in RAID 0. To be honest they are fast, but too small for my needs. I went and purchased 2 250GB SATA Western Digitals. I do alot of photo editing, graphic design etc. The space of the 250's is better, and the performance difference is negilible IMO.
