Raptor 75GB 8meg & WD6400AAKS

I have a Raptor 74GB, SATA-1, 8 meg cache hard drive that came with my Dell XPS almost 4 years ago. I am building a new gaming system and I am getting a WD 640 gigabyte WD6400AAKS drive.

What would be faster set-up as far as hard drive usage:

?1) Install Vista-64 Home Premium on the Raptor (will it even fit on 74 gigabytes?) and install games etc. on the WD6400

?2) Everything on the WD6400 and sell the Raptor

?3) Everything on the WD6400 but have Raptor to house pagefiles for the virtual memory

?4) Get another WD6400 and have O/S and related stuff on it and have all games on the other WD6400 and use the Raptor to house page files.

Also, if 4 is optimal, how much better is it (I am deciding if worth another $90 on a WD6400 since I do not need the storage room - I would just be doing it for performance)?

I can only speak to question 1, but you should have no problem fitting Vista on a 74 GB drive. I installed Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 on the WD740ADFD, the 74GB raptor with the 16MB cache. Installed it took up about 19 GB or so, and the complete installation was done in about 20 min.

I also have a WD6400AAKS, which I'm planning on using for programs and data (one prtition for each). I don't know if it would be faster than the other options you mention, but it seems pretty quick so far.

Don't know about paging files, I bought lots of RAM so I hopefully wouldn't have to deal with it

Vista is fine on the 74GB Raptor. Just try to install most of your apps and games to the WD6400 and you shouldn't run out of room easily.
