Rapid temp rise on i5 4670K when loaded

Hey,
I've had this PC for a few months, but only recently started adjusting the cooling settings. I'm using an aftermarket CPU cooler by Be Quiet.

My problem is when I begin a CPU stress test, the CPU temp spikes immediately. For example, it will go from 21C to between 50 and 60C within a couple of seconds.

Thinking this may just be the temp monitor I was using, I tried others. I've tried coretemp, realtemp, HWMonitor, AIDA64, Open Hardware Monitor. The problem is replicated in all.

So, is this normal? Also, why is the CPU temp (21C) so low in the first place? Which temperature is the most reliable? I've attached a screenshot for reference. The motherboard I'm using is a Gigabyte Z87X-D3H.

The sudden temp rise under heavy loads is normal for you chip. I wouldn't worry about the temps as they look fine to me.

The 21c reading you ask about is most likely from a MB temp sensor located in/under the cpu socket.

Stock cooler at stock speeds? If so, then those temps are perfectly normal for a Haswell.

That's fairly common for air coolers. Assuming it's performing extremely well, you can expect that your idle temperature should match your ambient temperature. 21C is like 70F, which is probably the ambient room temperature. That means you're doing good for a start.

Having the temps spike towards 80%ish of peak immediately upon going full load is basically standard for an air cooler. Water coolers typically will see the temperature rise more gradually, although it still happens over a relatively short period of time. Getting all the way to peak temperature typically takes some time on both air and water though as your system reaches equilibrium with the thermal transfer abilities of the cooler and the heat output of the processor.

Thanks for the replies guys.

If this is normal, that's great. I was just a bit miffed as to why the temp shot up like it did. I thought it would be more gradual as the processor heats up, and the same when it stops being loaded. Instead, it jumps straight back down to around 22C as soon as the stress test stops.

So, anyway, my plan was to use SpeedFan to manage the CPU and case fans. Which temp reading should I use to managr the CPU fan? Should be the sensor built into the motherboard, or the DTS sensor in the chip? And what about the case fans?
