RANT: WTF? USPS is stupid

If you go to http://shop.usps.com and order some (heavy) shipping supplies such as boxes (which come in multiples of 25), rolls of tape, or envelopes, you'll see that they're free. and there's no shipping cost to deliver them to your door.

BUT, if you go to the same website and order some stamps (which are as light as the paper they're printed on), you'll see that they charge $1.00 shipping for them.

WTF? $1.00? Just pull a stamp off the booklet, slap it on an envelope, and charge me $0.37 for shipping. Don't BS me with a $1.00 shipping/handling charge when heavy and bulky supplies ship for free.

But if you're ordering USPS boxes/envelopes, you can only ship them using USPS, thus they're making their profit from shipping costs in either case.

But you can use stamps with another shipping service? Negative.

Seriously, I think this is stupid. It doesn't cost $1.00 to send me stamps. It costs $0.37, or less since the USPS probably can send them for free, rather than pay itself.

How the heck do you turn them inside out? Wouldn't that tear the boxes?

Not the NEW ones. They say for USPS shipping on the inside now.

Yeah. They're already assembled. You just have to unfold them and tape the bottom shut.

I had heard that, but the ones I got have no such thing.. I got them about 6 months ago.

Shrug.

The box is glued together along one side. A razor is your friend.

Once you've dealt with that, you just turn it inside out and tape it up.

I'm getting $1+ on everything I put in a basket (supplies, envelopes, collectables, heavy stuff, light stuff) that isn't free has a shipping charge. Or in other words, it costs the USPS money to process money transactions (such as CC fees) and they choose to recoop those losses with shipping/handling fees. What is your complaint again?

Put JUST boxes in your cart with no stamps. Free, with no shipping charge. My question is, why do they charge shipping on stuff you're already paying for, but for 'free' stuff, there's no shipping charge?

Ah, gotcha. Good point. But it costs them money to process a CC transaction at the post office, and to pay clerks to staff the counter. But I'm not charged $1.00 to buy stamps at the counter...

Lets just say not all pricing at all locations make sense. The USPS is essentially a private company but has its pricing controlled by the federal government - a senerio for stupid things to happen.

Solution: just pick up stamps at just about any store at face value and be done with it (I assume you shop sometime in your life). Forget the shipping charges.

theres no way they can make money on stamps so they make money on shipping. 1 dollar to save you however much time u need to go to the post office to buy it yourself. time is money. i'd say it's still a good deal.
