Rant: Why do ALL of the new mice suck so much?

I'm trying desperately to just find a mouse that I like as my old one is crapping out on me, and there are none to be found.

Logitech:

I have no idea what Logitech was thinking going with only one button on the side of the mouse, but I use BOTH buttons. ALL the reviews I've seen have lambasted them for taking away the one button, so I'm very curious to know what research told them that this was the right thing to do.

Microsoft:

SCROLL WHEELS CLICK! PERIOD! When I scroll one notch down, I want to know when I'm done moving that one notch. That was a terrible idea, and would be even worse if I played FPS that scroll through weapons, etc. with the wheel. Again, a terrible, terrible idea.

The only option is to go with something that looks like this, where I'd hit that button in-between the forward and backward button ALL THE TIME, or this that is too small for my hands (I'm 6'9", so I HATE small mice).

What I want (and I can't believe they don't have) is a mouse just like this, but with two buttons on the side.

I ended up getting the MS Wireless Optical Desktop 5000, which was as close to I could get (on the mouse side, anyway). It's wireless, has two side buttons that I won't push when I don't want to, but its response time is terrible, and the wheel doesn't freaking click.

I'm done now, but I can't be the only one that feels this way.

Cliffs:
- Logitech and MS mice suck now.

I'm still real happy w/ my 4 or 5 year-old Microsoft InteliMouse.. 2 buttons, 1 scroll wheel (that clicks!). Just as long as I clean it every now and again it works perfectly albeit w/out the bells & whistles.

Except for the wires. I obviously don't HAVE to go wireless, but I want to. Clearly that's too much to ask.

no problems with my MX 700, i love it.
Other than availability (since they don't make it any more) and price ($70). I got my KB/Mouse for $99, so paying $70 for just the mouse is too much, especially given that most are used.

That's what I have now, but A) I'd like to go wireless, and B) it is double-clicking every time I click on something, so that's annoying.

Ever since I've tried my first wireless mouse I'm never going to get a wireless mouse ever again. It was so slow and low DPI.

The MX518 is great. It isn't missing any buttons.

That IS too much to ask. If your gaming, you NEED wired.
MX518, G5 all are good mice. And they do "click" like you said, it stops after one notch on the scroll.

Wireless is useless in gaming. No matter what, there is lag. No getting around it.

You can get a Cordless Desktop LX 700 which features both cordless keyboard and cordless LX700 mouse for $59-$69. Here is a link: Link

I'm using it right now.

not really, its mostly just people that like crap on wireless mice. lag isnt really all that prevelant. radio signals and IR travel at the speed of light, like most other signals in the universe, and the problem is usually in the mouse update rate in windows, not the mouse itself. Windows limits it to 400times a second i think. Custom drivers from say Razer for the diamondbacks can up it to something in the thousands, but for the average gamer, it's really not all that much a deal. It's pretty much superflous and all in your mind that wireless mice are slower, or you are using a crappy wireless mouse. I play half Life 2 andQuake 4 and all other game fine on a intellimouse optical 2

what wireless mouse have you extensively used?

the mx1000 doesn't have two buttons on the side?

the thing i really like about the mx500/700/1000 is that there are scroll buttons in tandem with the scroll wheel. so when i have a really long way to scroll, rather than spinning the wheel like crazy i can just cruise with the button. but the g5 and g7 don't seem to feature that.

He's concerned that he'll press the application switch button in between the two buttons. The truth is, though, the application switch button is pretty well out of the way. I have never had a problem pressing the middle button.

As for the "cruise control," you can program the DPI switching buttons to be cruise control with the G5 and G7. You just have to run the Setpoint drivers.
