Today's rant: Idiotic presumptions about athiests/agnostics

I don't know about the rest of you, but I am extremely sick and tired of idiotic presumptions about athiests -- the most common belief (among some) being that not believing in god somehow creates a huge void inside a person, which leaves their life empty and meaningless.

I've seen this used many times, but here is a recent quote (taken from these forums)
"It's not easy to be an atheist. Yes, I'm sure fearing hell 24/7 is rough, but living with the meaninglessness of life and the nothingness of death isn't a day at the beach either."

To those who agree with the above, let me tell you something: Athiesm is like being liberated. You are totally free and in control of your life with no one telling you how to live, what to eat or what not to eat, how to dress etc etc (I am talking about religions in general, not just christianity, since some religions require you to dress/look a certain way ...(you get what I'm trying to say)).

Except society, of course.

What do you percieve life to be for you then? Note: I'm asking this sincerely, and I'm not trying to start an arguement; I just would like to know.

Look at the 2nd reply;

This is your typical conversation about religions.

I am kinda tired about people forcing their belifs on people and that applies only to Christians. I have never ever ever seen someone from another religion forcing theirs on me or anyone else. I am also very tired of athiests posting or replying to them because you can't reason with someone that has tossed reason out the door.

Society and laws -- yes. There is really no way to escape from them.

I should have been more specific. I mean free from religious obligations. For example you can feel free to make your own value/moral system, you dont have to think: "would god approve of me doing this" (or something along those lines).

<< What do you percieve life to be for you then? >>

That's a hard question to answer really. My view goes something like this: We're here for a short time after which we cease to exist. Life has no purpose or meaning, so we should all try to live our life to the fullest extent we can (whether that means financial sucess, fame -- its all up to the individual).

I guess the view may be a little flawed (consider it still in beta ;)), but I more or less formulated it myself.

There are always stupid and thick-headed people out there, some are religious and some are athiest.

It's just that some don't create threads and rant about it on internet message boards.

You paint yourself to be exactly who you hate.

I think what the person was referring to is the belief by athiests of once you're dead, you're dead. That's got to be a pretty frightening prospect.

As far as the meaningless of life part, athiests must struggle with the question of why the're here, especially if it is all futile in the end (death is permanent, there is no afterlife). Religious people believe that there is a purpose, albeit unbeknownst to them (God's ...or your diety of choice's ...will and purpose behind creation.

Some people are dumb no matter what faith they hold, or don't hold. But why did you have to re-affirm your non-belief to all of us?

reitz, we are always in our feelings exactly who we hate. That's why we hate in the first place.

No they create posts about sweaty men in pink tights working for the WWF.

That's why I dislike instead of hate:)

Hmm... If you're an atheist you don't fear hell at all because you don't think it exists.

I've been an atheist for about 7 years. My day to day life isn't really any different (other
than the obvious growing up). I just realized that I'm the one to blame for my problems, not
God.
