RANT---Why Alltel Sucks

Well, I'm in Alltel Hell. Not only is the only major cell carrier where I live ALltel, but the local phone service is the same, and they're the only game in town for DSL.

My cell phone has been nothing but problems. They've messed up their bill more times then I can remember, so I don't do an auto-payment. For some reason ( I think it's a conspiracy).....my cell phone bill doesn't arrive every month......sort of intermittent. WEll, with Alltel, here's what happens. My bill prints on the 9th. If by the 9th of the next month, if they haven't recieved payment, they'll cut the phone off. No phone call, nothing. Turned off. They cut it off to charge you $35 to turn it back on.. I do pay my bill on time if I get it in the mail, but sometimes I do forget (it seems like mail is nothing but bills anyway). I've looked into other services, but where I live is covered with trees pretty bad, and when I first moved here, I had a different carrier. Alhtouhg my address showed up as being servicable, when I brought the phone home (SprintPCS), it didn't work inside the house, and barely worked outside. Sprint has supposedly added other towers....but they won't let me turn my phone on without a connect fee to see if it works better now. Neither will Cingular----so unless I want to pay $35 to see if a nother carrier works at home......I'm stuck. Now, I hae a reminder to check my checkbook every month on the 8th to see if I've paid the bill......and if I haven't I pay it in the store....which is a PITA...but I do it to save the $35 disconnection fee. Their customer service is really bad too.....(won't go into it here), but for now I'm stuck with Alltel Wireless. I've actually thought about just cutting it off....

Now, I've recently moved to a new house in the same neighborhood, so I transferred my local phone service and my DSL to the new house. The phone number stayed the same, so on the day wew moved in , I met the Alltel tech here, and verified that my phone and DSL were connected, and it was. That was 27 days ago. Today when I woke up, my DSL was turned off. When I called tech support, I got bouned around to different people, so I just called Customer Service. Speaking to them.......I finally found someone that could read tehier computer screen, and she told me that Alltel failed to transfer the DSL on the bill, so when they did an internal audit of my account, they found out I wasn't being charged for DSL, and they turned it off. That by itself seems ludicrous. So, she was very nice, and very helpful (a rareity), and called a few people to see what was going on. 10 minutes later she got back on the phone and apologized, and said, well, I'm sorry to tell you this, but it looks like it's going to take 5-8 days to turn your DSL back on. Thankfully, she was very nice, and understood that I had a right to be frustrated, and she herself couldn't understand why it would take so long, especially, since I've not recieved a bill number one, and number two......she saw on my account where I had called in to have EVERYTHING transferred for the move.....and told me it wasn't my fault. She let me speak to a supervisor who said he'd have to call me back.

So the long and the short of it is.....avoid alltel at all costs. I like this area a good bit where I'm living, but if I knew what I know now before we moved, I'd have picked a different area where Alltel wasn't the only game in town. Hard to believe I know....but that's the hell that I've had to put up with them for over a year. Never thought I'd pick an area to live in by the utility companies, but I will now. This little story is just a molehill of what I've had to put up with from them.......(not including accidental "cut-offs" where they disconnected my complete service erroneously, or where my first phone bill had $120 in incorrect charges--they tried to charge me for the install of a jack that I put in myself)

PS.
Looks like I'm their b!tch for now, b/c the only other way to get high-speed internet is via Charter, and I've already read a good bit of posts about their high-speed service stinking. ANd when you work from home, this is even more irritating.

Back to 56k indefiitely.

I had the same type problem. I moved and I let them know two months ahead of time. I moved and I never got my bill. I called again to inform them. They assured me that they would fix it. Another month and no bill. I call again and tell them that if they don't get it right I was not going to keep their service. Once again I didn't get my bill.

I didn't call them I just stopped using the phone and I got a new phone. One year later, I checked my credit report and Alltel turn me over to a collection agency. I found that to be lame. I never got jack sh*t from them. I told them on multiple occassions my new address. It isn't my job to make them get it right......

Assholes....

I've had Charter for a little over a year, and had no problems with them. Of course I just jinxed myself by saying that. What area do you live in?

Odd. I've had nothing but good experiences with Alltel. Been with Alltel almost three years and the only problem I was was self-induced (the first month I accidentally threw out the bill because I thought it was an advertisement 😱 ). I've never had a dropped call either.

I'm in Sanford NC. Alltel Cell phone service has been acceptible.....but the customer service is horrible. Literally, out of the 15 months I've been a cell customer, they've messed up about 5 phone bills...and of 15 month sof being a local-telco subscriber, they messed up 3.

I got a call from the Supervisor today that said he wasn't able to accomplish anything today, but will update me tomorrow. He said he's gonna do his best to get me setup tomorrow, so I'll wait until then to b!tch anymore. Knowing Alltel it will still take them a week to fix it. And, on top of that, after I get reconnected, I have to call them back (per the supervisor) to have them adjust my bill for the days I wasn't hooked up.

What's really frustrating is that they didn't even call.......they found an accounting error, and just turned it off. Turns out the accounting error was related to the first two months I got free on my service. And, as of yesterday, like I said above, they said 5-8 days to reconnect........which is absolutely ludicrous.

They have me by the "shorts".....b/c I signed a 1 year deal with them, so I guess I'd better just lube up. Shoulda woulda coulda gotten cable via Charter......

Update:
32 hours later. Still no return phone call from Supervisor who called yesterday and said he would call today. And no GD DSL.

Again No DSL. Now been over 72 hours since I first lost DSL. And All of this over an accounting error on their side. Turns out that they only $ they lost so far was not even valid b/c I've not recieved the first bill where I'm due to pay for DSL. I'm going to call them Monday and attempt to disconnect my service. This is for the birds. I'm sure they're going to try and charge me a disconnect fee, but I'm cancelling because they suck, and I work from home, so I need a good connection.

I waged a successful war against MCI in 1998, so maybe I'm to start fighting another one.

(MCI in 1998.....got suckored in changing LD phone plans. Asked 5 times if In-state rate was 10C/min all day ever day. Yes, 5 times. I only make in-state calls. Are you sure? Yes. Changed to MCI. First Phone bill over $90 b/c all of my in-state phone calls before 7:00 were charged @ 25-35 cents a minute. I cashed a bonus check from them to change. Anyway. After my second phone bill came in of $60 I called them and complained and cancelled. Well after over 90 phone calls.....MCI refunded the difference in what I'd paid for the .25-.35 cents a minute to what it should have been @ .10. They then took of the extr $50 charge......and asked to have my service back. I told them I wouldn't use them if they paid me each month. I hate scams and crappy service.)

Alltell DSL Performance is very very good. But grab the vaseline if you need any service.

I got screwed by MCI in 1993. I told them I wouldn't re-sign if they gave me free service forever.

Update: 5 days without DSL.

It's amazing what sort of BS you get told over the phone. I just had an account rep that my delay was based on qualifying for DSL. And when I told her that I already had it, and it was cut off, she didn't believe me. Sir, I don't see any indication where you've ever had DSL at that address. I asked her to look at last Thursday's notes when I talked to the last representative. Sir, I can only see the expedited order to turn you back on on April 2nd. I asked her why it was expedited. Sir, I don't have access to that information.

Realizing she was not very sharp, I hung up and called back, and immediately asked for a supervisor. After about 5 minutes with him, I asked for the corporate office so I could send a certified letter of complaint. He gave me his address. I asked him for the corporate office again, and he said that all that is handled internally. So, I just laughed, and said I wanted to disconnect the service. He was about to cancel the order for reconnect on Wednesday when I asked him if I'd be charged the disconnect fee. Sir, I can't handle that information. Let me transfer you.

This time I get back to the DSL department, which is funny, since tehy are the ones that intitally told me it was a billing problem, and put me in the billing loop on Thu. I speak to a CSR there, a nd she tells me what the first lady did, that she has not proof that I already had DSL service, but she did see where my line was currently being qualified for DSL, and that installation should occur on 2nd. I politely asked for her boss, and finally got somebody that was nice. So, she's going to try and get it reconnected today. She gave me her name, and extension and said she could let me out of my contract if I called her back, if they couldn't get it installed today.

I guess the only way to get service is to tell them you want to disconnect. But they still got me by the shorts, b/c it's aout $200 to disconnect early and I'll believe they are going to let me out of it when I see it in writing. Again. Alltel is the worst customer service I've ever dealt with in my life.

Final Update:

They got it turned back on @ 5:00 today. And the last lady I spoke with called me back today too. I guess you just have to ask for enough people's boss, and go from there.

Funny, but now my Caller-ID is not working. I'm scared to call because they might have to turn off the DSL to fix my caller id.

Anyway....I'm back on and I guess since the DSL service is good, I'm just going to cross my fingers and hope for no more problems. 🙂
