RANT: What happend to buying hardware/software and you got all of the functionality?

Im seriously getting tired of seeing almost everything on the market now coming with a monthly service fee after you pay a ton for the hardware alone. Online computer games, XM/Sirius Radio, DVR, OnStar, much much more, etc. Where did the days go that you bought something and everything was included? If I pay $500 for something you shouldnt have to pay a monthly service fee to use it. Now if you get it for free and then pay monthly service fee, I have no problem with that. Also, the more people that subscribe the more the price should go DOWN, not up. Cable/Internet/Cell Phones for instance should work like volume software licensing, the more people using it the less the price should be. I should have to pay extra $$$ to unlock something when I already have. Software for instance, companies are selling items by the "module" now. You pay thousands of $$$$ for the software and all you have is a non-functioning GUI. You have to pay for every little piece you want to use. Im not talking about cars and gas

EDIT to RANT: I dont mind if they charge ~$2-$5, but $15-$60 is overcharging. BTW: The only thing I have is a cell phone which my plan did come with everything I needed. I just look at ads on TV/Newspaper/Online etc. I am too much of a tight ass (for hypn0tik) to buy anything.

CLIFFS: Either sell the whole dang thing or dont sell it at all.

If you don't like a companies business model you don't have to buy the product.

A lot of the things that you mentioned require a continual feed of some type of data to the hardware that you purchased...XM/Sirius sends the satellite feed, DVR gets the program guide data, OnStar is basically a light cellular phone service. If you go buy a stereo or DVD player that does not require a continually updated stream of information to be sent to it from a company than there are no generally no fees. The software by the module issue is different. I haven't seen a lot of that, and I work with a lot of large, expensive software systems, but I do not see a problem with it. Think about those consumers who only need a certain aspect of functionality, it will actually save them money to only buy the pieces that they need.

the way you describe it I do agree...but I still think a once only activation fee should be it....that way I am not stuck with an expensive useless piece of hardware if I cannot pay it later down the road

It's more like cable TV, which people happily pay for.

DVR - requires listings data. It would be nice if it could function like a normal VCR without the service though (yes, I know SOME TiVos can use a free service)
OnStar - Uses the cellular network, right? I'm sure the phone companies charge them something for that, regardless of usage. It would be nice if they had a la cart pricing though. It'd be nice to have it, but I know I'd rarely use it - not enough to pay $17 a month for.
Online computer games - those servers ain't cheap.
Software by the module - that's not bad, it allows you to buy just the functionality that you want.
