Other people say the same thing about white Americans you know. My family members, when they come to America from Korea, first thing they comment is on how much Americans stink. People that I don't even notice because to me they smell neutral, my family members can barely stand around because they reek,

Smells are a cultural thing. You think someone else smells, most likely that person things you smell too.

Yep. Americans to most foreigners smell of canned meat, and rancid dairy. It's the amino acids that are most released when we sweat because most americans have a diet that is high in dairy and meats. As such that is what we smell like to foreigners to other countries. Dead cows and rancid milk.

Many Koreans smell like a bad Drydock to me. They eat a LOT of seafood and some of the stranger seafood items that most Americans won't touch with a 10 foot pole. So as a result many Koreans from korea smell like a bad drydock. Just the way it is.

Deodorant is bad for your health and nastily "masks" the BO. I prefer only shower + occasional cologne.

at a gym?

agreed. this thread has nothing to do with that, though. it has to do with smelling like shit and not allowing people around you to breathe.

But when has a thread on ATOT stayed on topic?

I do laugh at those chicks. Or when they will do their "workout" right in front of you and than give you a dirty look when you happen to look at them.

Deodorant doesn't stop someone smelling. It doesn't even hide the smell.

yes it does. if your BO is so bad that over the counter deodorant/antiperspirant cant cover your funk then you need to go to the doctor and get prescription deodorant/antiperspirant or botox injections in your arm pits.

I don't wear deodorant because I'm a cheap ass. I don't see the need to waste money on it. besides some bath soap has a deodorant has deodorant mixed into it.

I think the guys that fart in the gym are worse than the BO guys. The gym I go to is rather small and even when someone drops a fat duece, the bathrooms are so close to the gym that it can clear it out. If you have to cut one, step outside or something. I dont want pink eye damn it!

Seriously?

Deodorant BEFORE going to the gym.....

LOL

Yes, it's not the sweat that smells, it's the bacteria that thrive on it and begin to stink like hell so BEFORE a workout would be a good idea and to the OP, I agree, we have a co-worker who refuses to shower or wear deodorant at all, he is the laughingstock of our entire dept, how he can ignore his own stank is beyond me..

I'm sure he is referring to the people coming from 3rd world countries that don't seem to realize that there is access to enough water in 1st world countries to shower every day, not once a month.

If you're like me even with all the antiperspirant in the world, if I'm working out, I still sweat right through it, and it still smells. Nothing I can do about it, unless I put foil tape on my arm pits or something but that would not be very comfortable.

A gym is not really suppose to be a pleasant smelling place. It's a place with a bunch of sweaty guys lifting weights, yeah it's going to be a little smelly. :p

On that note I do prefer working out at home and not having to deal with having other people around me.

you got it.

It's not that they don't realize they need it...they don't wear it (or shower regularly or change their clothes regularly) because it's not part of their culture.

And, yes, it's effing nasty.

This thread makes perfect sense at to why there are so many male virgins on the internet. To all who shower and don't use deodorant or an anti-perspirant, you SMELL, and no it's not clean. Maybe for an hour after you get get out of the shower you smell clean, but you'll smell un fresh later in the day. I bought some $8 clinical strength unscented deodorant from Target, call me crazy but if I can use something that has no sent, and can keep me from potentially smelling bad I think it's worth me spending a whole damn $8 every 2 months *shrug* And for those cheap asses, they have some $1.50 arm-n-hammer anti-perspirant that works decently, definitely better than soap+water.
a whole.

Here's a secret, people don't notice their own BO, if you're using only water + soap you don't smell clean. You know who else always claim all they need to smell clean is water + soap? Hippies, I hope y'all enjoy smelling like hippies. Deodorant isn't a gimmick, it works. Here's another secret a lot of people are simply too polite to tell you that you stink, so just because you don't smell it, and nobody comments on your odor, it doesn't mean you don't smell musty.

Deodorant at Costco is something like 4 sticks for $5. It takes a ridiculously long time to go through that much. I also buy 10 tubes of toothpaste at a time. My teef are always clean

I'm Indian and I don't smell. Then again, I've been in the USA since I was 2 (I'm 26 now). It's not just the Indians though (although they do have a large precentage of bad-smelling people in the US); I've worked out with Asians, Europeans, Africans, and South Americans that all smell bad (and I've worked-out with their counterparts that did not smell bad). It's all about assimilating to the culture, the societal norms, and the residing country's diet. I am South African-Indian-American, and I eat a decent amount of "cultural" dishes, but I shower at least once a day, use deodorant and cologne, and don't give off any B.O. that any of my friends detect even during workouts(trust me, I've asked since this is something I've been aware of since I learned of the stereotype of my race in the beginning of high school).

If someone is not aware of his/her smell, I've found the best thing is to just tell them without being demeaning or insulting. Be somewhat apologetic and he/she will understand that you are just trying to help him/her assimilate and he/she will not think of you as a complete and utter douche-bag.
