Story--- one of my little brothers friends(freshman in high school) decided to go out to CompUSSR and buy a bunch of computer parts with all of his money. he got frickin butt rammed. $130 for an MSI kt400 motherboard. BARF. $130 for a stick of 512 PC-3200 pny ram. PUKE. 5700LE, BARF. generic PSU...sick. athlon 2500, some cheapo case and a CD burner. guess who he asks to help him make it for him? yep, me.

well, as i expected, i had problems with the motherboard. let me say this, I HATE MSI :|. IDE problems once again. i had to run the cd drive as a slave on the primary IDE channel off the hard drive. that was the only way i could install windows. 3 hours after i got there i FINALLY got into windows. install some programs and leave(back to college).

guess who left me a voicemail on my cellphone? yep. him. his computer restarted in CS and he claims that windows wont let him on his computer anymore. great. im an hour away at school and he expects me to somehow magically fix his computer? i just want to scream "WELL IF YOU BUY CRAPPY PARTS, EXPECT CRAPPY RESULTS!@#$@" cheap generic everything and you are asking for it....ugh. he wont leave me alone either, im getting barraged on AIM with questions about his problems.

and what am i getting out of all of this? a bunch of headaches and a loss of about 6 hours of my life. ive got other things to worry about like school and a girlfriend...

end rant.

**UPDATE**

:|:|:|:|

so the kid i made this computer for and my girlfriend(sorry, im not sharing pics :p) are on the cross country team (boys and girls teams) and the 2 teams were having a pasta party(they have one before every meet)....

my girlfriend just called me saying that the kid was having a bunch of problems(keep in mind computer was working fine when i left) and he talked to a bunch of the guys on the team. apparently they came up with the conlcusion that i messed up his computer and his hard drive is fried. they say that this is all my fault and that i have fried peoples computers before(i have never friend ANYTHING). pretty much they are blaming me as a scapegoat, which makes sense because i am at college and cant defend myself. so my girlfriend said that the guys on his team told him he should make me pay him for a new hard drive and that i didnt know what i was doing. my girlfriend said that they told him i overclocked his hard drive and fried it (WTF??)

this crap makes me so angry.

so to sum it up...

I am kind enough to drive the hour trip back home to assemble a computer for my brothers friend
I did not pick out any of the parts, and a lot of them were cheap, generic, and/or just plain bad.
I did my best and got his computer working, computer worked fine when i left.
I recieved no money or anything for that matter, for my travel and headache.
I thought i did the kid a favor...
Kids computer goes FUBAR
Kid takes it to other kids on his team, they of course blame me and say i fried it.

this is THE LAST time i do anything like this for anyone.

so basically to sum this up-- i bent over backwards to help my brothers friend, but in reallity i got bent over and rammed.

MSI sucks. So do just about all of his parts. Tell him to take them all back and buy a HP or Compaq.

On the bright side, this shows that they look up to you as the computermeister :) Now if only they would ask your opinion BEFORE buying the hardware...

Dude! ... shoulda got a Dell...

Btw, my main rig is running an MSI KT4V-L (1.0) mobo, so if you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me. Performance of PCI, IDE, and USB 2.0 isn't so great, but at least it's been mostly stable, which is much more than I could ever say for Via's earlier attempts at a chipset.

Still miss my Abit BX6-r2 with i440BX though. Rock solid.

PS. I think I paid ~$150 for the mobo and a retail XP 1800+ CPU, two years ago. I can't believe (ok, I lied, I certainly can) that CompUSSR is charging that much for it. It's not exactly state-of-the-art any more. When I bought mine, the NF2 chipset wasn't even on the market yet. Enough about that, what's done is done.

Kind of, for being a wuss and not making him take it all back and either buy good parts or a Dell :)

I stopped trusting MSI after they tried to inflate test scores in reviews of their first i865 boards by putting in a hidden dynamic overclocking "feature" that turned itself on and off and wasn't shown in the BIOS.

After TomsHardware made a big deal about it, MSI made a massive advertising buy, and in the next roundup of boards, MSI was the Editor's Choice. Hmm........

Nice story, reminds me of some systems I've built. I don't get so many calls though. ;)

Anyway, I suggest you tell your brother's friend that he should maybe figure it out on his own because you don't have time to help him with every little frickin thing. ;)

Nah, at least he did the sensible thing and put together an AMD system, instead of like a Cr*p-a-r0n 1.8Ghz or something.

Even if he went back with all that stuff and got hit by the cr@ptastic 15% open box fee, he'd STILL be able to make a better system with the money left over. :(

Wow :Q "butt rammed" doesn't do justice to the raping he received. More like "a sperm whale had its way with him"

MSI is pure garbage..not the board that gets hand picked and tested for review here at Anand...the board you buy out there on the street. Buy Biostar if you need a really cheap board...at least it will work.

Anyone who buy's parts at CompUSA if not an emergency is an idiot...why help an idiot when your just going to get an idiotic response? Wash your hands of dip@#$% people like that.

Just be glad you didn't charge him anything or his computer would have been your responsibility for life. If he gave you a cupcake, that entitles him to free tech support, 24/7.

MSI has been good to me....Well, their non-value nForce2 board is quite decent.....

I think the problem lies with that KT400 chipset. It seems at best that only one or two manufacturers can make decent boards on those things.
