My dad purchased TurboTax despite me telling him NOT TO. (Because of all that crap they are putting in their software this year.) But he buys it anyways, because he's used it for a few years, and knows HOW to use it. So, anyways, I built his computer about a month and a half ago, and it ended up crapping out. (I eventually got that fixed, and posted it in the OS forum. Re-Formatted, Re-Installed, etc.) Anyways..I try to reinstall, and it says "Product Already Activated." Ok, so I figured this would happen, they are trying to prevent piracy. So, I search ALL over their website for a 1-800... number to call. I mean, I have no problem, faxing a receipt in, or something. So, after searching, the ONLY 800 service they have, is like 14.95 for 30 minutes of tech support. And this is for installation issues on the software, NOT TAX ADVICE. So, I eventually have to connect for "Live Tech Support". (Probably a bot of some sort, just searching our conversation for keywords.) And mind you, that I was "chatting" with a live agent for like 35 minutes.
So, I ask for help, explain the situation, and they ask me "When did I FIRST install the program." And tell them, I don't remember the exact date, and won't be able to give them that, but can narrow it down to the WEEK. Well, they basically start telling me that they need a date. After telling them that it's NOT POSSIBLE for me to give them an exact date, they come back to me, and tell me "Well Mr. XXX, we are going to make an exception for you in this case, and give you a new Product Activation Number." DON'T GIVE ME CRAP, we bought it, it is OURS! You are NOT doing us any favors.
So, after installing it with the NEW number, it worked. My question is, do they not see that this is LAME? What if someone else has to re-format for other reasons as well. I have NO problem with companies trying to protect their interest, but they need some better schemes than this.
Does anyone else agree with me? Or am I just an idiot?
