*Rant* Tax programs trying to squeeze more $ out of you

I have H&R Block software.
I switched from Turbo Tax years when they cut out investment worksheets (Schedule D?) from their Deluxe edition, thus forcing you to buy the more expensive premium Edition. (Lots of customers left Turbo Tax in droves that year and never looked back.)

as Im filing my 1040 extension, the H&R Block program says this:
We recommend you e-File your extension. It's faster and more accurate than printing and mailing*

the * says there's a e-File fee + sales tax.

who the hell cares if it's faster or more accurate?
it's a simple extension form!

I'll just leave this right here: Taxes are a bill the government sends YOU. Why do YOU have to do all the math?

Personally I do the math on bills sent to me as generally I'm expected to pay them and I want to know that they weren't pulling shenanigans in figuring out the bill, trying to fuck me over. Its helped me catch a fair amount of stuff (often its a simple mistake, but it still would've cost me).

They reversed that decision fairly quickly after they made it for both download and physical copies. I was still able to use them to file that year. Since then they have removed some forms from the download option but Schedule C and D still exist if you buy the disk.

@Paladin3 The shit part is that even if you pay and pay the right amount, they can fine you for not filing the paperwork. Missed a quarterly 941 some years back and owed a $300 penalty even though I didn't owe any taxes.

in the back of my mind, turbo tax will keep doing more money grabs in the upcoming years

I have an accountant do my taxes for $45. Worth it. Paying the accountant pretty much pays for itself. For example this year I got an extra $300 on top of my regular return as there is a carbon tax refund program. I would not have known that if I was doing taxes myself.

Wtf accountant does your taxes for only $45? That's less than the cost of tax software in the states. Any real accountant would likely charge someone $100 for the easiest and maybe $200-300 for an average return. That's just a guess though - I do my own so I wouldn't know.

Either you have a super easy tax return - or Canada tax returns are super easy in general.

It's someone that does it from their house, home based business, so low overhead. My parents always went to her so I did too and continued to once I moved out. And yeah when I saw that tax software can cost more it seems to me it makes no sense to do it myself. The government does offer free software though, but still have to know how to use it and accounting/math is not my cup of tea. I'll let the experts figure it all out.

That was 2015 and they haven't tried anything since. But I did try H&R block one year and holy shit did they suck for schedule C businesses. I needed to enter some data in a field their help said should have existed. Called their help line who couldn't find it either. I went back to turbo tax after that

for me, it has worked fine for the past 4 years.

but one day, I might let my mom's tax accountant do my taxes and compare the results doing it myself with H&R software

You know that it is not a requirement to use software to do taxes. One can do it by hand. In reality it is actually a security vulnerability to do taxes using software.
