RANT: Supermarket Deli Counters

Supermarkets are *relatively* well designed to keep the crowds moving through them...except for the friggin deli counter!

Almost everyone going to the supermarket buys lunch meats, so naturally it's one of the busiest parts of the supermarket...but then why does it seem they always put the slowest, most inept people on deli duty?

I spent over 15 minutes in line at the deli counter yesterday just to get some stupid turkey and cheese. And there were only FOUR people in line total...and there were TWO guys working the deli! It was unreal

The ENTIRE rest of my shopping took 15 minutes. So right there, i doubled my time in the store. I swear if the worker would just move a *little* bit faster they could cut the wait time in half!

I once saw a supermarket where you place your meat order on a computer, then come and pick it up when you're done shopping. I've never seen that again. But that makes sense!

super stop and shop has that. they rock. unfortunately, i think they only rock the east coast.

we usually buy our cold cuts at whole foods and their deli counter also seems to have the least motivated, least friendly workers compared to the other departments.

There's a guy that works the deli at the local County Market supermarket in my town. He knows me by name. I walk up to him, confirm I want the same thing as last time, and he'll have it ready for me by the time I'm done with the rest of my shopping.

He's a great guy and really pays attention to detail. My slices are laid out flat, and cut just thick enough that they don't shred when I pull them apart. 🙂

It's at Giant over here but the problem is I like to see how they slice the meat. One time, the idiots give me 1/4" slices no joke. I personally like it as thinly sliced as possible.
