man this is really pissing me off
i just bought unreal tournament 2003 yesterday and was unable to install it because of the securerom crap so i just returned it and picked up NOLF2 today.
and yep you guessed it, same crap. i can't install this POS either
Why do the game companies do this crap? or if they do, at least support all the different vendors
i know its been complained about but i just had to get this off my chest

Probably got read errors.

There was another thread about this earlier today, apparently a lot of people are having problems with UT2K3 + DVD drives.

Installing using a standard CD-ROM seems to work though.

I may be new to this, but what is "securerom crap"?

Copy protection which causes the disc to deviate from standard cd standards, rendering them unreadable by some drives.

Unofrtunately the last 3 CDRWs I've used (S&F, TDK, Plextor) installed CDs OK but were very spotty about spinning up for disk checks and other in-game CD reads. Nothing fun about having to replay several turns of HOMM because the game crashed trying to spin up for a victory screen or needing 2-3 tries to get other games to pass the CD check.

here is my system that includes this:

CDRW: Pioneer 8x4x32

I've never had one single problem with it - ever.

I never could get UT installed.
I called Epic or somebody and they said, "CD-Rs were not supported. The box says CD."
Unbelievable.

I'll tell you what dude, just copy the main game files over from the CD into their proper directories, and I'll send you the reg file and cd crack you need to play it...

I had to do the same with mine. Better yet, when the game crashes, it loses all the reg information, so I actually had to reinstall it 5 times.

I had problems with NOLF 1 where I couldn't play it with Music turned on. Too many games that come out these days are crap out of the box.

Hehe, sorry, for UT2K3, although I imagine the exact same thing could be done for NOLF, given that you knew someone who already had it installed and could send you the reg information.

I WAS going to buy NOLF2 this weekend, but I've got a DVD-ROM in my pc so I'm not even going to chance it. I could install from my burner, but then I need to keep the CD in it at all times to play and I like to keep it filled with a CDRW for packet writing.

The kicker is this only stops people who BUY the games...pirates have it figured out already :(
