Rant: Stupid @#$^$# Banks

I cannot stand banks and the way they process payments. Highest amount first and then in descending order. So, say you end up $50 overdrawn (and no overdraft protection...can't get it) and you had one payment of about $100 and 4 others of about $10. Guess what? That's *5* overdraft charges! Not 1...but *5*!!!!

Fvckers!!!

Or at least work with you and reorder them or debit back the overdraft charges on the small ones since if done in ascending order, there would only have been 1 overdraft charge.

My wife works at a bank, and used to write the letters to people who were behind in payments. I'll ask her why they do that...

...she said they do it on purpose to get more money out of you! 😀 She also told me they can forgive all the charges, if you are nice about it... and crying helps.

Tried the nice route...no dice.

🙁

And this is the first time in at least a year I've been overdrawn...durn back-to-school got the best of me.

that's happened to me before. i called them up and they changed it to just one overdraft charge by rearranging the order.

it's a good idea to have a good relationship with someone in the bank branch.

Rule number 1, "Everyone is trying to get the largest amount of your money while doing the least amount of work"

I had verizon double charge me 150 bucks over the weekend once, it bounced the account. The worst thing is i saw it that weekend, called verizon and they said they couldn't credit it back until next week (bastards) and then the bank said they couldn't stop payment on the check while it was pending (???) and to call back monday morning. Monday morning they told me they couldnt stop payment once it posted (???)

4 items went through and bounced, 120$ overdraft fees, 60$ for 2 of the bounced check fees. (the other two just caused an order to be canceled.

Long story short verizon fessed up and paid the fees. The bank did nothing. So now i am still with verizon but switched banks.

I knew I was cutting it close but now I'll be dinged $120 (5 * $24) instead of just $24. All because they sort the transactions from highest amount to lowest. Nothing bounced...it was all paid (debit card). I'd just like that extra $96 back...

So you've bounced checks before?

Sounds like you need to take responsibility for keeping your checkbook balanced and not spending money that you don't have. Then the bank can't take advantage of your weakness.

The explanation I have heard is that the bank assumes your biggest checks are the most important and believes those are the ones you would want to have paid.

blah blah blah. Just because the money isnt in his checking account doesnt mean he is spending money he doesnt have.

I dont balance my check book, never have... I pay only a few utilities with checks, the rest I use CC with plenty of limit on it. Then I pay that off every month.

This is why I'll never understand why people use debit cards. All the excess-spending issues of credit cards, plus increased liability minus a grace period on payment.

If you must know...it was last summer when my now ex-wife cleaned out the joint bank account while checks were still out.

How can they sort transactions unless all 5 checks were being cashed on the same day...?If you have 1 X $100 and 4 X $10 checks and the first 4 were cashed yesterday and now you have $20 in your account and then the $100 check is cashed you're out just one overdraft - they can't turn back time on the other 4, cash the $100 first, and then try the 4 X $10 checks...

It's when the payment hits the bank for processing, not when the card was used or the check was written.

I'm suprised they didn't refund back the other 4 fees. As a policy, if you aren't someone who commonly overdraws and account, the bank I work for will refund all but one fee if you call and ask. Maybe ask to talk to a manager, and see what they can do for you. You sound like you are a good customer, and don't do this sort of thing regularly.

Of course, if its a large corporate bank, they probably won't care if you are a good customer or not.

Yeah but what're the odds of 5 checks hitting on the same evening, for instance!!?

Well, they were debit card transactions (with it used as a credit card in 4 of the transactions) and those are typically processed within 24 - 48 hrs. I was taking my daughter out back-to-school clothes shopping and knew I was cutting it close but thought I was safe.

No, it's not all happening because they sort transactions a certain way, it's happening because you wrote checks for more money than you had.

Now yes, it sucks.

Yes, banks do this deliberately to get more money from you.

Yes, it would make me madder than hell, too.

But... it's still your fault, not the bank's fault.

I know it's my fault...but...it should only be one overdraft charge...not five. I have no problem with the one...I knew I was close. But to be dinged five times for it when just a variance in the handling of the payments would correct it?
