They just fired a coworker who I was good friends with for no reason... and over the weekend too! :|

They said she wasn't working out and blah blah, but they never made any mention of it to her during reviews or her tenure here of 2 years. She totally didn't see it coming and is just devastated.

This is not the first time they just fired someone without warning. And all other times it was personal reasons where an exec or bigwig didn't like them or something like that...

I smell lawsuit...

Edit - Some more to unload off my chest

Now what makes me mad is her superior is walking around all two-faced being super nice and happy while trying to sell Girl Guide cookies for her daughter ...

But I can see right thru their charade & it pisses me off

Isn't it illegal to fire someone w/o a prior warning? I smell a big fat lawsuit.

Yeah, that's why I'm still here.

I have been unhappy with my salaray for a while now... and raise isn't coming soon enough, but where else can I go. Not the best time to be unemployed.

yup, i was thinking most employment was "at will"--meaning you can be fired at any time for any reason.

depends on the state

In this case, the province of British Columbia.

If I recall correctly from my business law class, you can't just fire someone without just cause or an establish case against them.

If it was due to poor performance, then there should be a few warnings given to the employee first before youc an fire them, or they can sue.

Actually a persone can't be fired for several things or else the employer would face a giant law suit. One example would be firing someone because of race. Of course it would need to be proved in court that indeed that was the reason, for which the employer would make something else up.

if she was not LAID OFF and was in fact FIRED then they have to give her a real reason, and if her track record with the company and earlier and previous reviews are all of the positive nature, they better come up with a good reason why they did this all of a sudden.

At my previous company, the contract that I signed stated I was an Exempt Professional and I can leave at any time, along with the fact that they can terminate me (sounds cool eh?) at any time. I don't think it matters if there is just cause.

I hate this one. Not to sound racist, but there are a lot of Blacks at my job that only have their jobs because they're black. I work in a company where clear communication is essential, and several of these people basically speak ebonics to our clients, but heaven forbid if we fire a blackman, we'll just get rid of the white guy with a family, that just bought a house and found out he has another kid on the way.
