I found that some people some e-mails for the smallest thing when all you have to do is pick up the phone, dial the local number, and tell the person what it is. One of my friends has written me an e-mail about what we should do the next day when all he has to do is call me. He lives in my neighborhood for crying out loud and we end up doing something like biking around, basketball, etc.

Someone was telling me how at his work people who are just a cubicle or two over send an e-mail to him instead of just walking there and handing the document to him or talking about whatever it is.

The people at my last job would email each other about meetings/etc and some of them were in the same office!

How hard is it to open your mouth and ask a simple question?

what's wrong with that? i don't think just because it is small, you can't send an email... email is fast and cheap, no need to save it up for something big.

Yeah but when you're one cubicle over or you can make a phone call instead of exhanging 10 e-mails in 5 minutes with someone a few houses down, why not just call?

Earlier this week, some mid-level secretary sent out an e-mail to allusers@workdomain.com (about 300 active accounts) saying "whomever borrowed my HPLC book from my desk, please return it." This is a weekly thing that really makes me upset about the allusers setup my work has.

I think for office/workplaces, emails are preferred because they are in writing. Meaning there's a trace of the dialogue; you can't say "oh well I forgot or I didn't hear you" if you get an email on it...because theres proof you got the info.

email is 1000 times better than the phone, though I much prefer using IRC as its quicker and more convienient

I would much rather email/IM than talk on the phone.

Yeah... phones are for chicks.

Funny work story - at my job last summer, the guy two doors down to my right would always call the guy two doors down to my left... and they'd both use speakerphone. So I could hear guy number one's voice from his office and guy number 2's speakerphone... and I could hear guy number 2's voice from his office and from guy number 1's phone... Creating some sort of crazy double-stereo surround sound effect. Annoyed the piss out of me, why didn't they just walk down the freaking hall?

i dunno, i just prefer email.... i can get back to it at my own pace, take my time to read and process what was written.... i guess if it was clear that there was a communication problem, i would just talk to them, but most of the time email suffices.
