RANT: Retail isn't fun this time of a year

I have been in retail sales for a while now (8 years now) and I can tell you this is my last Christmas retail. I am tired of people lol. I work at a Cellular store where all I have done for the past 5 days is deal with customer problems... "This cell phone sucks" "Your service stinks" "Why isn't my phone working?"
People there are a couple of things that you can do to make our life easier

1. DO NOT LIE: I am tired of people telling me that there is no way their phone has ever touched water and our tech must be wrong. People we opened up your phone, sand and water came pouring out, want to see it as proof? What also gets me are the ones who deny ever making that long distance call on their bill saying that they don't even know anyone out of the state. When I can look at your phone and see Uncle Joe has the exact same phone number as the one your disputing and you also have him in your last 10 dialed numbers.

2. There is a policy and they have it for a reason: People we send phones out for a reason, after 30 days we send your phone out for service. 2 times out for service (within the warranty) and you get a new one. No I am not going to give you a new phone because the number 5 has worn off and you've had the phone for 4 years.

3. If you are nice to me I will be nice and do whatever I can for you. I've had people who seemed understanding and were extremely nice throughout the entire process, I am willing to bend the rules for these people. If you come in yelling at me and telling me what I will do, I will just continue to tell you what I will not do (in a nice way 🙂 )

4. Shop early, but not too early: In the past I have had to do returns for people in other electronics stores. One December way back when, I had a lady want to return an organizer that we sold her but she didn't have a receipt for it. I said ok. Took her info, searched in the system, after about 20 minutes of searching. The lady amazingly came up with the receipt out of nowhere. I scanned in the receipt and all I heard was a buzz from the computer. I looked at the date and it was dated 2/11/02 (keep in mind this is 12/15/02) I told her I couldn't accept this back as a return because we have deleted it from our system it was soo old. She wanted to speak to my manager because I wouldn't let her return a christmas gift she bought for someone when she started her Early shopping.

5. Leave your pets at home: We had a lady bring in her chihwahwa (sp?) place it on our front counter, while she talked to another rep about plans. 3 minutes later the dog peed all over our counter and on a couple of phones. She picked up the dog and walked away leaving the mess behind.

6. Leave your kids at home: I know easier said than done. But people bring in their kids, they run all over the store screaming and yelling. They have even been known to run out to the car and grab their crayolas and draw all over our walls.

7. Don't abuse the support we give you: I don't mind going the extra mile, I have delivered products to people on the side of an interstate several times. I have given my cards out to people with my Cell Phone number on it. Never stops people from calling me 3 times at 3:00am then cussing me out on my voicemail that I don't answer my phone or return your call.

sorry folks rough day at work 🙁

I worked a commission sales job that got me through 3 years of college. I eventually burnt out because of all the crap you have to take, but the pay was great for the skills invested.

it can be fun. Depending on the job and the trouble you go through to get that commision. I have had great checks in the past during this time of the year. Things have changed dont make that money anymore

holidays are the best times for commission pay ;-)

made like 4x more on back 2 school week!! woohoo

I like that stance.

Frankly, I figure a sales associate shouldn't even speak to me unless I ask.

Depends on where you go, You'll find people who stand around and do nothing. And you find people that really care about their job. I really do care about the job, and I love what I do why else would I have done it for 8 years? Now there are people who just don't get paid on comission thus they don't care (sorry folks who this sit. applies to, this isn't always the case) they get paid the same whether you buy from them or not

True, though, a sales associate has never made the difference in my decision to spend my money or not.
They have contributed to me leaving with a slight smile, or some added insight.

LOL, I see how you can come up with that assumption. But I tell you it is wrong. I am mearly stating the facts that erks me the most about the holiday seasons. I still love what I do, and when I get a chance or if I am in need of money I may come back to sales... Just am about to move on to bigger and better things.

I have to say that your request to leave my kids at home is disturbing. I *did* leave my kids at home on Black Friday, because of the crowds and the 5:00AM standing outside in -10°F. But if my kids aren't welcome in your shop, then kiss my a$$.
