Well, its official. ATi sucks my big fat left nut. I ordered a Radeon 8500 64mb DDR from newegg. I got the thing, toss it in my comp, remove all old drivers, in with the new. Fire up my favorite game for the time being, Tribes2, I crank up all the settings and...........oh....it sucks. Lags like a futhermucker. Me and my bro both got new vid cards this week, He got the Gef3ti450 (gainward golden sample) and I got the Ati Radeon 8500. Now of course I originally was gonna get the gef3 also, but a few of my friends, one already a radeon 7500 owner, and one a gef3ti450 owner, both suggested the 8500 because #1, its better in benchmarks, #2 cuz it is supposed to handle future games far better than the gef3.

Now let me say, I am throughly dissappointed. Ive tried 4 drivers, 2 straight from ATi, 2 Beta release all with no improvement. Ive tried it with multiple games, not just my beloved T2, and it still eats royal dick. Someone on here last night suggested that I format, which in my opinion was absurd, who here has ever formatted for a new vid card?! Certainly not I, and Im not about to start. So as of tomorrow, this bitch goes back in it box right back to my buddies at newegg.

Anyone else had problems with ATI cards? I know theyve been garbage in the past as far as drivers go, but Ive heard people lately saying that they are really cleaning up their act. I'd have to disagree.

Anyone ever dealt with a return to newegg? I havent ever had to return anything, is it a pain in the ass? Any info on any of the above would be great. ATI lovers, feel free to plead your case ;)

Did you turn off V-sync? It's default ON in Display Properties.
And it's funny, because my friend's Radeon 8500 rapes Tribes 2...and basically every other game...so maybe you're having isolated problems, or most likely your config isn't right somewhere. Radeon 8500, in my experience, works well with every game I've played it with.

But to answer your question, newegg returns are easy as pie, but they take a week...if you really need the money quick...ship it to them as fast as you can.

I had high hopes for the 8500 as well but returned it after 2 days. Much happier with my Ti200. There must be something to the 8500 though as there are a lot of happy owners out there.

I like my 8500. Was the Newegg a retail 8500, or the Powered by Radeon card?

Goober- sorry to say man, but the best thing with an ATI card is to format your HD.....I bet if you do that, turn off vsync, you will love the card.....

ATI- killer hardware, terrible drivers. I had to go back to the original drivers for my 7500 for Dark Ages of Camelot, every other driver causes my comp to lock up.

you probably have vestiges of your nvidia driver still on ur system. or whatever video card you had on their before. i had same problem when i upgraded from geforce mx to ati 8500. once i deleted the nvidia drivers and reinstalled ati, no problems. :)

Give these Plutonium Drivers from Redsoftware a try. I was having driver trouble too (lockups) but haven't had any trouble with these yet. They are a special blend of offical & beta release drivers. I'll give them the full test this weekend though when I play the WCIII beta a lot (used to crash all the time with my ATI drivers.) :)

nut and platinum, thanx for the input.

Platinum - What all did you remove? I mean I went to add/remove programs and removed my nvidia drivers thru there. What else is there? Im not all super elite when it comes to software. is there an exact folder I can find these remaining pieces to my nvidia drivers?

Edit: also thanx to tux, Ill check those out right now. Update in a few minutes - see if these have any positive noticeable affect.

I figured Id add my system specs, see if you guys see any obvious probs.
- AMD Athlon 1GHZ/200fsb
- FIC AZ11
- 512MB PC133 Crucial
- RADEON 8500

to be honest i don't remember exactly how i did it either. it was a real hassle to do tho. it took me like 5 different tries w/ the ati drivers before i got it right. i was really upset. :( but it works well now.

Link

goober check out that link. it's the Geforce4 Ti 4200. their saying it'll be available for about $150.00. mb it would be best to return ati to newegg and buy the ti 4200 when it's available in a couple of weeks. :)

Not so sure Im up to the hassle. Im thinkin I'll just roll back over to my baby nVidia. Never EVER had any problems with them. I think I'll go kick my friends' asses now. They owe me $15 in wasted shipping. Assmunches.

EDIT: Whoa good call platinum. That may be worth the wait. I think i am just gonna send the card back and wait. I can make due with my brother's old card which I currently have up for sale. Its a gef2TI and it overclocks like a bitch and is really stable. Not a bad card, just nowhere near as nice as his GEF3TI450.

did you check out my link? according to kyle at hardocp the g4 ti4200 is actually faster than the $350 g4 ti 4600 when OC'd. that's not too shabby.

I just put a Radeon 8500 64MB in my wife's pc and it's great. Q3 runs super smooth at 1024x768x32 with 2xAA and all the eye-candy maxed out. I agree that formatting the hard drive to install a vid card is insane. I see that many people here do that to fix just about everything.

Anyway, when I installed her card, I went to the device manager and removed the nVidia Geforce2 GTS, shut off the pc, yanked out the old card, thru in the new card, booted up, installed the latest drivers from ATi's site, and started playing. Super-sweeeet. :D

Doing just add/remove won't really move those Nvidia drivers from your system. Theres registiryentries as well asother stuff that Nvidia or Ati drivers leave on your comp. Visit rage3d.com and browse around the forum for a solution to removing those Nvidia drivers. You can also see what people believe is the most stable/optimized drivers out at this point. The Radeon 8500 was great for me, but I had to sell it back because I didn't really need it at the time. I miss it. =(

You should try Tech Support or the Video forum...

And you shouldn't label ATI as junk just because you are having a problem, because so many others are pleased with their ATI cards.

I was going to say maybe a T2 setting like some type of fog was causing it, but since you say all the other games are the same way, then it's definitely a driver issue.

Don't mind him, he's clearly never owned 3dfx...

Goober, search your HDD for all files nv*.* and del them all (look at them first though). Seriously, that's what I do.

>>>User incompetence<<<

Well said. I couldn't agree more. And the more he talked ,the more evidence he crapped out the card to begin with by trying to O/C it.

I just ended Serious Sam II with my Radeon 8500 and it was great. The eye candy was unbelievable. I am now going to play it all over again on my Win98 box with a Duron 1.1 gig CPU and GF4. I will then post my personal observations about how good the cards are in the appropriate forum.

Loser can't set up a video card and he blames everyone but himself. Pathetic.:disgust:
