Well I'm asian, and I have the typical asian parental units. I just applied for a loan for a new car recently. I'm getting a 96 Toyota Avalon XLS with all the options minus the gold package, with 51k miles on it, maintained exceptionally well and it's near flawless minus some wrinkling in the front seat leather seats (Just very wrinkled). He has all the service records, logged all the oil changes with reciepts (didn't do it himself brought it into a shop). I test drove it for about 20 minutes, and I was pretty much sold. I offered 12,300 for it, and after some explanations as to why I think that was more fair he finally agreed to it.

Well I tell my parents about how I thought I got a fair deal on a used car in great condition, and BOTH my parents told me that I should have asked for 11,000. ARRRRRRRRGGGGHHHH...... THEY SIMPLY CAN'T TRUST MY JUDGEMENT!!! I'm 22 and live at home, work part time, and go to school (pre-pharm). So I got into this big argument about how they always enjoy putting down my judgement and making me feel like I can't make it out in the real world, etc etc.

I checked on edmunds.com and it seems like I got a reasonable price... as it's often hard to find used cars in such great condition with low miles (The guy selling it was a retired police officer).

So essentially two things are running through my mind now......

1) Does anyone elses parents do this?
2) Did I get a decent deal on the car?

Also if anyone has a carfax account can you e-mail me a record of the car?

you must admit though, it is kind of ironic that you emphasize your independance, yet you strive so hard to get their acceptance :p

i'm just playing with ya :D

Hehehehe, yeah I guess I do that.... but it's kind of hard considering I have to live with them. I mean, I would just like for them to NOT consistently tell me how poor my judgement is despite the fact that they don't even really know what's going on. NEITHER of my parents even saw the car before they said it.... I guess they have a rule of asking for 2000 dollars under what anyone is asking for (dealer/seller).

An Avalon? What are you 50? :D

Nah I'm just playin, that's a good deal considering or hoping most of those miles are highway/freeway miles. :D

Don't listen to your parents. You live and learn on your own mistakes. Trust me on that one.

If you don't like living with them... MOVE OUT! You're 22, I don't care how fricking asian you are. If you didn't live with them, you wouldn't have to worry about what they thought of your car. Hell, you wouldn't have to tell them you bought a car.

your parents are always goinng to care for you, and try and protect you. your living with them are you not? that is part of it, you gotta take the good with the bad. you can't turn it off and on, have some patience and respect for the people who have spent half their life keeping you up.

Hehe can't afford to move out at the moment, only work part time, and 1000 dollars a month isn't going to pay for rent/food + 4 years of a car payment and the cost of school. Gotta stay.... but agggh.... just wish they'd pretend that I wasn't their 10 year old son sometimes hehe...

If my parents moaned on at me about my decision of car buying, it would "erm...shut up" time.

Just ignore them, in fact while they're moaning but your fingers in your ears and sing "la laa laa la not listening la la"

22 and living at home, nout wrong with that, I plan to live at home until I am about 25...I would much rather have people go "why are you still living at home? why don't you get your own place" than be like them and there struggle to pay bills. I pay a nice amount of housekeeping/rent anyway so everyone is happy!

does no one show respect to their parents anymore? you tell em to erm...shut up and maybe they won't let you free load so long. you should be happy that your parents care enough to worry about your financial matters. i know i would if i had seen either of them in the last decade.

What I would do:
1. Move out. There is nothing that helps one's relationship with the parents than distance.
2. Do not talk to them about anything that will cause an argument. Some people love to argue. I hate it.

Sounds a little high according to Edmund's, though without knowing where you live it is tough to say for sure. Frankly an Avalon is a pretty stodgy car for a 22-year-old, but to each his own. In any event, you really need to get a place of your own . . .

Not asian, but my dad always looked @ my new auto/large purchases & told me to take it back, there was still time...

Just appreciate them for what they are & that they care enough to screw with your head;) My dad died 4 years ago, I'd give up any/all of my toys to hear him tell me to take something back again.

Parents are just like that. They don't mean any harm. They are just protective. I know my mother is.

That seems a touch high based upon me essentially picking a number out of my ass but if it is high it's not grossly high...

I've driven two avalons in the past year and those cars are SWEET. I mean sweet like suga'. I never thought I'd love a massive boat of a vehicle with an auto transmission and a lot of power until I drove one. Really a nice car to drive especially on the highway.

I wouldn't question your judgement for paying the price you did for that car, I'd question your judgement for spending $12,000 when you have only a part time job...

Heh, seriously. How can you afford a $12k car and not be able to afford a one bedroom apartment?

How is that even enough to pay for the car + insurance + gas? Seems to me you should've bought a cheaper car...

<< I plan to live at home until I am about 25... >>

Damn...

I've been living on my own since 17, and I can't imagine someone living at home past even 20. I feel like I've been independent for so long, I can't imagine just now starting my life (22 now). It's one thing if you're in school, but if you're not on your feet by the time you're 25 years old, something has gone awry. Then again, my mom would have been furious if I spent my entire income on a car whilst she took care of all my other bills.

Do you think this means that he plans on living at home till his 4 year car loan is paid off?

How can you people leech off your parents till you're 26 years old? I mean, jesus christ, that's about time to start having your OWN family, not time to find your first apartment.

Adding to my previous point, if you live at home, how can you expect your parents to treat you like an adult? If you aren't capable of supporting yourself, you should expect your parents to second guess any major purchase you make. They actually took it alot better than I would have if I was your father.

<begin simulation>

"Nice car son"

"Thanks dad! I hoped you'd be impressed"

"I am, now get the fvck out of my house freeloader"

<end simulation>

Those were my thoughts as well. If you live at home, you're not independent, you're answering to someone else. There's more to being an adult than age alone.

bah, thats nothing, an asian friend of mine's mom thinks hes gay for wanting to have a male roommate. and of course he can't tell her that he has a girlfriend, because the GF is a white swedish looking girl. (tall, blonde, that sorta thing)
