ERRRR.... :|

I bought my digital camera 2 days ago and today my compact flash arrived by UPS (got the sandisk deal on hotdeals).

As soon as the door bell rang my dad goes well what did you order now. Everytime I get something thats computer related he gives me this little talk about how I shouldn't waste all my money on this stuff. Well its not really a talk, but a look and a "Why do you need that? Why did you waste your money on that?, etc...

Now if I buy one thing a year he doesn't complain. But like this week I got my camera, a card reader, and a flash card. He was like I can't believe you spend all that money on that stuff. Also I got some money from my Grandparents estate when they died, and he honestly I think counted what all I spent on computer parts, cause he can go well you spent blah blah on this and that. Why in the hell does he care? its my money...

I love my dad, but if I had the money he spends on cigs everyday I would be a rich man.

Sorry just had to let it out. Do any of your parents do this?

Tell him its for his own good, and that you learning about computers, and computers are the future. Therefore, when he is old and grey, you can pay for his retirement! It all works out in the end! :D

It's just the individual. As long as you're not irresponsible with the cash (like going into a lot of debt), then it's your disposable income. Try "Yeah, I know it's a lot, but I enjoy what I can do with the stuff, just like you enjoy cigarettes." If that's too inflamatory, you might want to mention that being technically savvy for today's generation is just as necessary for its future as just going to college was for his. It's an investment in your future! :D

my dad is like that too. he blows his money on worthless crap and complains when i buy a new shirt or something of the like, or i go on a little getaway (nothing extravagant, only a road trip or something). of course he is the type of guy that goes to work every day, and works any OT that he can. i mean i don't think he has ever called in sick that i can remember. he will be sick as a dog and go to work. he won't take a vaction day for anything...like to watch his son play baseball. he works second shift and always has, won't change his schedule around to see his kids more or to cheer them on in sports. guess thats why i quit sports...mom would always sit in the car and read a book cause she was afraid i would get hurt, and dad was always at work. but i grew up and i am fine now. as did my sister.

i guess my point is, that all fathers are like that in some respect...they just don't understand cause in their day it was work for the money and save it. don't buy anything you don't need. (except cigarettes evidently) i suppose some mothers are like that as well...although mine wasn't. just let it roll off your back and don't worry about it. he is just looking out for you.

My dad is the opposite. He's more likely to say "Why didn't you get the better one?" :Q :D

"You only got a 1.3MP camera? Why didn't you get a 7MP one?"
"You only got an XP1600+? Why not the XP1800+?"
;) hehe.

If your Dad smokes then that changes things a little. If it is your money to spend, then spend it as you please. If he complains even more, point out the hundreds of dollars a month he spends on cigarettes.

Jeez man I hear ya, my dad thinks I waste my money - and he smokes like 3-4 packs a day (yeah I know he is gonna die nice and early) anyways, thats like 10 bucks a day! WTF thats an assload of wasted money...but he makes $60 an hour so I guess that aint too bad.

I know thats quite a heafty paycheck - dont worry he gives me none of it. He bought my older brother a 1999 GMC Yukon, while with me, he gave me $2000 towards my 1990 ford bronco - and I get to pay him back.

EDIT: Oh yeah, he pays my bro's insurance too. And my bro is 31, Im 17. My bro makes $25 an hour, I used to make $11 - now Im unemployed. Anyways yeah - I get to pay my dad back for my new tranny also.

Since I came to the USA as an international student seven years ago, the only person I had to rely on was me. No one could help me, all I bought had to be bought from the money I made. Now I have a nice apartment, good car, great computer, TV, VCR, good education, grades... It's nice to think about it and say that all I've achieved in the USA was because of me and no one else's help :)

My parents always yell at me for buying my computer parts and other things. I just bought a cell phone two days ago because I just a car and they were yelling at me for not getting a hold of me when I was gone. They kept saying we should keep in touch if there was a emergency. So I got a good deal on a cell phone at BB and they told me "Stop spending money! You always waste your money!" I was like OMFG you were just yelling at me for not keeping in touch and now yelling at me because I spend some money so they can call me whenever they needed me. It is like a lose-lose situation with my parents.....I don't even tell them what I buy anymore computer wise. My Dad thinks I am still on a 800MHZ Athlon. Hehehhee.....he is soo wrong. :D :D

My dad used to do that to me until one day I was like "Dad, I'm sick of your opression, you don't own me" and I beat the living crap out of him. Then he called the cops on me, but he learned his lesson.

Seriously though - My dad used to say the same thing. The only time it bothered me was when I knew he was right.

I stopped telling my parents a long time ago, what they don't know won't hurt them
