RANT: Outlook sucks balls

fs5

Lifer
We use exchange at our office (problem #1) therefor only Outlook is the only client. Our exchange server is in Europe (problem #2). Client sents me 9 mb attachment through email, it takes 10 minutes just to select the email. 10 minutes to save it. Another 10 minutes to delete it! (that part I don't understand.)

All the while Outlook looks like it's locked up. If I didn't know any better I would assume it crashed. Isn't one of the rules of UI to inform the user wtf is going on?

Joy. Our company is moving to Exchange server too. Can't wait to suck ball. We'll be using the web based client.

outlook/exchange combo definitely has many instances where it says 'not responding' when it's actually doing something. our users wreck their personal folders all the time by clicking 'end task' when they just need to let it hang for a while.

Actually you need to use FTP rather than email for 9mb files. I've restricted our email to 5mb attachments. Anything larger use FTP.

We have an old version of Exchange server, and the web client absolutely sucks. I hate it.

Modern OWA is cool, but yeah exchange 5.5 and under web client sucks.

FTP would be preferred except when you're in support. It's easier to say "email it to me" which 99% of people know how to do versus "open up an ftp client, logon to ftp.domain.com, and upload the file."

FYI If you're running any antivirus program with an Exchange Plugin enabled, disable it. That wreaks havoc on Outlook even if your exchange server was on the same lan.

edit:
A co-worker passed along this article to me recently. As much as we all despise Exchange and Outlook, for what it does it is still the best.

Exchange sucks only until you have to deal with Lotus Notes or GroupWise. Lotus can't even be bothered to use standard Windows conventions such as F5 for refresh, CTRL+Left Click to select multiple items, or Click and Shift Click to select an entire range.

it's in the initial setup for the client.

same place you find the server name and your user id. it's a simple check mark

oh, by the way, outlook 2003 and exchange 2003 required 🙂

basically it behaves like pop when downloading the email, but has all the "exchange" advantages as well...like GAL, shared calenders, public folders...etc.

Yeah, getting our users to use FTP would be like pulling teeth and way increase support calls.

I would give anything to be able to use Outlook/Exchange at work again...my office is in the middle of switching to Lotus Notes, because that's what the rest of the company uses. Every time I use it I find something else I hate.
