Well, sometimes monoprice cables are so cheap, the s/h is more expensive than the actual item. Just saying...

this is my exact problem with newegg right now. They could put it in a usps package for $2 if they wanted to.

Don't worry... you'll feel more ripped off when it comes in a cheap padded manila envelope :).

SVC.com sells 10' USB cables for ~$2 with ~$3.50 shipping. Different brand though. I like SVC, free shipping on Arctic Sliver 5. :)

It's only $4 shipping for me. Monoprice is about $2.50 shipping for the same item.

The main problem with newegg isn't really so much the high shipping on small items...if you do the math, lots of times that individual item is still reasonably priced versus competitors....if you were just going to buy that one item. The problem is you get no benefit from combined shipping. I buy most of my stuff at the egg, but if I wanted to get a few case fans, some ram sinks or cables or something, I'm stuck paying 5, 6 bucks "shipping" for each one. I buy that kind of stuff at svc or monoprice since they throw it all in one box and it just goes up a little bit for weight.

That's odd, when I order a set of parts from Newegg the combined shipping is much less than the total of the single-item shipping rates.

When I order something small I always order something else to make up for the shipping. To ship an item will cost the company enough money so you take that hit, not the company. I highly doubt they make any profit off $7 shipping. Try $30 shipping maybe, and even then, depending on the item (ex: computer case) it can cost over 15 bucks just to ship.

I don't see how Newegg is saving money by using DHL - just give it directly to the USPS as the base option ( and for small items ) and UPS/FedEx as upgrades ( or standard for larger items ).

Oh yeah. DHL sucks. TN->TX should not take a week. It takes them a week to get from Knoxville to Garland, then they dump it on the USPS.

My employer is the local UPS hubs largest customer. A 1 lb item costs us $6 to ship. At $7 shipping, they aren't making any profit off of it. The extra $1 covers packing materials the box.

Yep, doesn't matter how much the item actually costs, its the man power/hours to pick up the item, box it and send it out. 2 dollar cable, 800 dollar chip, same thing.

This is absolutely not true. I think it might have been this way in the past, but that was at least a few years ago. For a test I added the OP's cable, a case fan, and some ramsinks. The UPS 3-day shipping for these items is $6.99 each. If there were no break on shipping, then it would be almost $20.97; however, the combined UPS 3-day shipping is only $11.45.

I think SVC gives a bigger break on combined shipping though. I usually order my case fans and heatsinks through them.
