The company I work for has started to limit and scan what everyone is doing online. Not for security or productivity issues, but because of bandwidth issues. Over the past few months and now weeks our network is extremely slow. Sometimes as low as 8 kbps, largely because we only have a 1.5mpbs/T1 pipeline; I?m guessing. They are thinking of getting a bigger pipeline, but first they blame the slowness to people doing things online that they shouldn?t be doing or something is wrong with the network. When in fact the biggest reason why it?s slow is because our engineers are constantly downloading big files from Microsoft like Vista images everyday. Although lately they have been told to try to limits downloads or do them at home and bring it to work; but that still has not helped.
Today our IT guy came around looking to see how many web pages each of us had going. This way he can give management a report of how much online usage is being done. Hopefully that will convince them to get a bigger pipeline. They are even thinking of getting a couple of cable modem accounts from our cable provider; $66 for 30mbps line sounds better than our stupid T1 line.
Oh I?m starting to hate this, no more off-topic, no more surfing useless sites, no more youtube.
