So I go online and buy a Hard drive and some Ceramique from NewEgg.com. It tallies up to about $100 bucks and some change. I notice they're charging me sales tax on my items, no biggie I say, since I know they've set up shop here in NJ. Thinking they're shipping from their warehouse in NJ I pay the sales tax with no second thoughts. Now I get an email with my Fed-Ex tracking number... And its from friggin California!

WTH!

taxes are charged where the store does business.

ie: where it set up it;s business license.

If NewEgg has a presence in New Jersey, then they have to charge you sales tax. It doesn't matter where the items ship from. There's nothing NewEgg can do about this.

I believe that if a store charges you tax for an item you buy from them in your state, they should at least attempt to send it from that store. Not across the friggin country from a state located on the opposite side of the nation from you!

P.S. Your rant = teh l4m3

You actually have the balls to threadcrap and say my rant is lame, and you write it in AOL Fanboy-ese?

like another member said, the NJ warehouse aint big, and prolly didnt have the stock

I think NewEgg is renting all the old "PhotoMats" in states around the nation, just so they can have a presence in the state to charge the sales tax.

Bleh...

I didn't think he could do that, because individual states are not allowed to regulate interstate commerce...or am I wrong?

why would they do that? if they did then people in those states would buy from them less because of the increased cost.

I'm sure that's it, cause like, the profit margin on sales tax is like, really high.

If Newegg has a facility in NJ (which they now do), then you must pay sales tax. Sorry, it's just the way U.S. business works.

Hell, my company held a trade show in Houston and sold products from that trade show. We are now required to charge TX sales take for 1 year after that show from any buyers in TX.

I guess you must be a man with infinite patience for the item to come in stock.

Technically, it's not since you are supposed to report every out of state purchase and pay the corresponding local sales tax
on those purchases to your home state. Technically.

Uh... ok..

Are you really that stupid? It's a tax. The store doesen't make any money on tax. They gain nothing by charging sales tax.

Christ.

Doesn't matter where it was shipped. If they have a business licence in NJ, and you live in NJ, you pay NJ tax. It's not neweggs rule, it's the state governments rule.

BTW - My newegg ordered linksys items were shipped from NJ.
