[Suggestion for new law]You cause a pile up on the interstate then you have two choices. Pay the salary of everyone you delayed OR you lose your license for a year.[/Suggestionf for new law] My job allows me to come in when I want within reason and leave after 8 hours of work. I wanted to get off of work early today since it is Friday. I woke up 2 hours earlier than normal. Got ready and went out the door.

First attempt, I got on the interstate and found out it was a parking lot. Broke the law like everyone else and turned around to go back up the on ramp to exit the interstate.

Second attempt, I took the back roads to work. Found they were ungodly backed up. No wrecks, just 10x more traffic than usual. Last I heard, the interstate was STILL not moving. As in completely closed down.

I wanted to be in at work by 7am. Just got in at 8:35.

I live in Charleston, SC so it isn't like I live in a HUGE city(one of the reasons I didn't move to a big city, I don't like sitting in parking lots also known as roads). The only time there are delays are when some idiot causes a massive pile up. Of course all the rubber neckers don't help once it is cleared but I didn't end up waiting on the interstate to see all the rubber neckers. I wish that they would assign cops to write tickets to rubber neckers.

BTW, I live 12 miles from work. What normally takes me 15 minutes took me 1.5 hours. 12 freakin miles in 1.5 hours.

UPDATE:

I found out what happened to cause the closure. The person that caused this should go straight to jail and when he/she gets out should never be allowed to drive again.

Some punks were driving down the road. They would cut people off and slam on the brakes. They would then proceed to go 10MPH. From what I was told, they did this for a few miles. Eventually they ended up cutting someone off and caused that person to swerve. That caused an 18wheeler to flip and leak something on the highway. So far I know that one person died. I don't know if the person that caused this mess was even involved in part of the wreck or if he/she got away.

UPDATE2:

http://www.wcsc.com/traffic/camera_page.cfm?cam=cam009&title=I-26%20mile%20marker%20203%20College%20Park%20Road

That is LIVE pictures of it. THEY ARE STILL trying to clean this sh*t up. They have to repave part of the interstate. Unbelievable!!!!!

No that is the law that needs to be put in place. So people won't cause idiotic wrecks or get bad drivers off the road.

Yeah, the interstate was backed up for about 20 miles. People would turn on the on ramp and see there was no way in hell they were getting in that mess. They simply turned around and got off.

I would have NEVER done this normally because it is insanely stupid. I figured that there was a little safety in numbers. i was one of about 20 cars in line to exit. A cop drove by and didn't do anything. He knew that if we got in the mess, we would just contribute to the problem.

The roads I would have to ride on are a little too busy. I would rather sit in my car than get hit by an idiot behind the wheel of a car. I only use my bike on mountain bike trails. Of course those don't exist down here at the beach :(

If this law went into effect, it would only punish the people that make everyone's elses life a living hell. Small fender benders are not a big deal. They clean those off the road quickly. For the whole interstate to close down like it did today takes a lot. I do hope everyone involved in the accident are ok but the person that ultimately caused the wreck should not be driving on the interstate for a long time.

Leave work early anyway. You have flex time, if you have something important to do (to you) today, Work the 2hrs extra on Monday. I bet your coworkers do that anyway. Just don't make a habit of it.

Or

Work faster/more efficient. Get 8hrs of work done in 6hrs. Don't think you can do that all the time, eventually you'll be fired or expected to do more in 8hrs.

Or

Skip Lunch

----

No new laws needed.

Actually no I don't have flex time. We have to work 8 hours everyday. We just don't have a set time when we have to be in at work and when we leave. Well we have 4 core hours but where we work the other 4 during that day doesn't matter.

Most of the time it isn't the accident blocking the traffic, it's the rubberneckers. So you would have to sue them also...

No I am a government employee. Our core objectives just don't allow true flex time because we need people here everyday of the week. They just don't care when you work as long as you work your 8 hours a day.

I wish we could send those people straight to jail. I have actually witnessed a rubbernecker that caused another wreck. This guy went out of his lane when he turned his head. Nailed the car besides him.

You need to add to that law that any asshat that can't maintain 55mph through a friggin tunnel gets their license revoked. I can't tell you how many hours I've sat in traffic in heat indexed 105 degree heat with no AC JUST to find out that the reason it's slow is because people are "scared" of the big bad tunnel and slow down to 35mph. Absolutely no other reason; no wrecks, no air shows, no nothin'; just asshats.

I've sworn more than once that if there WAS a 'force' and I was a user, I'dve been a dark side user a long, long time ago. Bodies everywhere.

It's times like that that I just hate everyone.

That nothing, once I had to go to from Darmstadt to Frankfurt (25km, ~15miles) to drop of a few Computers I fixed up for a small company there, it took me 3 hrs, because a truck flipped over and spread the load all over the road.

All the streets leaving the A5 were jammed, it was horrible, when I left Frankfurt to go back to Darmstadt, the standing cars extended all the way to Darmstadt :D

Man I could have biked in less time

Oh no, god forbid anyone cutting into your schedule! I bet they wanted to cause a massive pileup! Wait let me guess...if someone holds up the line at the grocery store, they should have to pay for everyone's stuff that's waiting behind them?

Yeah damn right. I try not to step on anyone's toes. Of course they didn't mean to cause a pile up but guess what? To cause a pile up that CLOSES the interstate takes something special. You have to do something totally idiotic to cause a pileup of that extent.

Like I said, normal fender benders happen. Massive pileups don't just happen without someone doing something stupid. Their stupid actions mess up my plans. They screw up the road for everyone else.

I feel I have a reason to complain because I have never been in a wreck and I sure as hell haven't caused one.

I actually sat in the merge line for about 15 minutes while nothing moved. I saw everyone turning around on the on ramp so I eventually did the same. By the time I got to work, the interstate was still closed and nothing had moved.
