**START RANT**

So, I installed the new Backup Exec 9.x on our server complete with a new SDLT drive from HP.

I finally got it working but when I tried a full backup of the drives, the Adv Open files Option created a huge cache file on the drives, filling up the free space and causing my system to stop responding. The backup failed. I tried to remove the cache file, but that hanged the system. When I rebooted (manually hit the reset switch) the server came up and now it has to resync (RAID 5) the drives. With almost 500GB of data to resync, its going to take a long long time. The crash somehow caused alot of services to stop working too, like Network. So now, I have to wait around and work on that when my drives finish syncing up. Looks like I'll be done tomorrow morning. Oh, yeah, I have to drive about 70 miles to get home later too. DMNIT!!!!

Never Ever do any upgrades or new crap on a Friday.

No users on Friday night. They all go home early. Any other night and I'd be seeing tons of complaints about server being down.

you have users on during week nights?

i would say you need a failover server. take one down to do stuff on, other is up, no user complaints. I have 5 fault tolerant servers with the 5th being 1200 miles away. when i need to do stuff, i schedule a fail over to the the second backup, do my stuff on the primary then fail back to the primary.

Your company's smart enough to provide the funding for it. Mine suks in that area. I'm only doing the support stuff part of the time.
