the best way to clean an infected system is to do it in Safe Mode and yet Norton Internet Security won't run in Safe Mode.

OMFG, How useless is that program?
 
btw, this system i'm cleaning right now for a friend is ridiculously infected. i don't know how many times i warned him but he let's his 14 yr old daughter do whatever she wants on this thing.

me, my kids won't be getting their own PC's in their rooms till they go to college, till then, they use the PC in the family room.
 
I thought you were talking about car navigation, and I was wondering how you put your car in safe mode.

i'm going to set him up with a Sonicwall Security Gateway appliance.

Content Filtering, Antivirus ON THE firewall as well as on the clients, same with spyware protection.

ya, that should significantly reduce problems.
 
The point of Safe mode is that it's bare bones start up with nothing to screw up.

I don't know how communist reply applies to this thread.

i think it's because i said i wouldn't give my kids PC's to put in their rooms and will require them to use the PC in the family room only.

i think.

otherwise, i don't have a clue how it would apply.

i'm using AVG Free to do it, but it annoys me i have to download another AV utility to scan this machine when he already paid for Norton Internet Security 2006.

NAV is highly ineffective.

from the looks of it, he installed Norton Internet Security on it AFTER getting infected. he never even activated it.

 
Personally, I wouldn't put too much stockin NAV doing a great job....decent, but not great.

I'm proabably not using the best stuff, either though. Just Kaspersky and Webroot.

In an associated vein, when a company has a free release of software, such as AVG antivirus, and a pay version of their same software, how much stock do you put into the free version working as well as the pay version? After all, if the free version was as powerful and full-featured as the pay-for version, why would anyone buy it? Just curious.........
 
Spy Sweeper is the best Spyware app I've ever used. Catches and deals with things many Free Anti-Spy apps don't. Worth the $$s in my opinion.

For Viruses Avast! is nice, especially for it's Bootscan capability.

NAV should have a scanner you can run from a DOS prompt(before booting into Windows, but that has always been a hassle.
