So I decided to update my software on my IPOD mini, and everything was going like clockwork UNTIL I reached the final step of the update. Apparently, to complete the update, I need to plug my IPOD mini into the AC Adapter. Well, I'm in college right now and I don't have the AC Adapter with me. It's at home. So now my IPOD mini is pretty much useless until I can find an AC Adapter to complete the update. How should I have known that the update uses an AC Adapter? Previous software updates never tells me to do it. Urgh.

yes, previous software updates DO tell you to do it.

as an aside, mine disabled all my album art somehow.

No, you need an iPod power adapter. The iPod has a proprietary plug.

yeah but he is talking about using the original USB cable that comes with the IPod. The adapter plugs into the USB side and then into the wall. Thus, turning the original IPod USB cable into a simple AC Charger. No proprietary issue here.

Back to topic. If you're at college, you're gonna be able to borrow one.

I bought my IPOD mini a few years ago. The AC Adapter that came with it has a firewire plug. Do the AC Adapters for newer IPODs have a USB plug?

I'm thinking I need to somehow plug my IPOD mini into a power source not connected through a computer. Maybe if I plug my IPOD USB cable into a USB hub connected to a power socket?

if you don't plug it into a computer, how does it update the firmware?

The first step is to get the firmware onto the IPOD mini by plugging it into the computer. You then need to plug the IPOD mini into the wall through the AC Adapter to complete the firmware update. You cannot use the IPOD mini until this is done.

this is how my update to 1.4.1 on my gen2 mini went:

1) DL the updater
2) i plug in the mini and it started updating.
3) it says "ipod has been updated, please leave ipod plugged blah blah". last time when i updated my mini, that message never went away. after a good 15 minutes of waiting and nothing is happening (and the ipod's screen doesn't say data is transferring etc), i unplugged the ipod mini
4) i saw the icon on my ipod telling me to plug it into an AC adapter. nothing works
5) i was like WTF. so i plugged it into the usb cord that i use to charge the ipod
6) apple icon shows up on the ipod's screen, with a black bar on bottom
7) once the black bar finishes loading, the updater shows that i have the 1.4.1 firmware
8) done

try your hub method... as long as you're giving power to the cord i think it should finish updating.

Weirdness. So I unplugged my IPOD mini from my desktop computer and plugged it into my laptop via USB. My laptop does not have iTunes installed, so I figured it might work. Well, as it turns out, IT DID WORK! My iPod finished updating.

Don't mean to bump the old topic, but I'm having the same issue after updating mt 20GB 4G iPod. I've tried a car charger, this tip, and nothing has worked. Any ideas?

Whoa! One of my old threads. Dang, it's been awhile.

Anyways, check out my post above yours. That's how I finished updating my iPod mini. I simply plugged it into my laptop via USB. My guess is that since my laptop did not have iTunes installed, it just acted like a power source.

No go. I tried three desktops and a laptop.
