RANT: I'll never trust Jiffy Lube again

I took my '02 Accord to Jiffy a few days ago for an oil change. One of the kid (a lot of these guys look like they're just out of high school) comes to the lounge and shows me my dirty air filter and offer to replace it. I told him not to and would rather do it myself some other time.

Today, I bought a new air filter to replace the old one. Upon opening the hood I noticed that the filter cover was not on correctly. None of the 4 screws were secured properly. Those incompetant fvckers had put the air filter in the wrong orientation preventing the screws from being secured.

Jiffy Lube definitely needs a better screening process. How the hell am I suppose to trust anyone to be able to replace oil if they can't even put in an air filter?

if you change your own air filter, why don't you change your own oil? If you have severe time constraints I can understand, but I like knowing it's done RIGHT.

What dumbass goes to Jiffy lube in the first place?!? Do you really trust those pimple farmers and high school drop outs to be working on your car in the first place?

Well, at least they didn't put the drain plug on so tight when they finished that it caused you to snap it off when changing it the next time.

Not that I know that from experience at all or anything. :|

In reverse orientation? Does it mean that all the dirt on the air filter is now flow into the combustion chamber?

I don't have the equipment and my apartment complex does not allow people to work on their car. My other option was to drive over an hour to my brother's house and do it there. Plus I had errands to run.

Not to thread crap, but last time I tried to replace the air filter on my 98 Honda Accord, I couldn't get the screw off...it was really really tight.

Nothing wrong with going someplace to get your oil changed when it's cheap and convenient, but there is something very wrong with going to Jiffy Lube.

It's amazing how hard they push to sell people air filters every 3k miles at jacked-out prices. I've only been to Jiffy Lube twice in my life. The first time was in '96 in my DSM. I drove a lot of miles for business (about 3k-5k per month), leaving me no time to change my own oil (or to even think about dropping it off at the dealer for a day). The fsckin' idiots tried to rip out the air filter in my '92 DSM turbo, a 2-hour job by the book (believe it or not, it's true), and after I told them not to check it for that very reason! Cost me over $300 to have it fixed, Jiffy Lube would not accept responsibility for their fsck-up, and I didn't feel like the hassle of small claims court.

The other time was last year when I sold a car. At the last minute, the buyer insisted on having the oil changed as a condition of sale. I had little time, there's a Jiffy Lube not far from my house, and they're cheap, so I ran it up there. I specifically told the bastards (politely) not to even look at the air filter, as it didn't need to be changed. I turn my back and here's the son-of-a-bitch with the perfectly good air filter in his hand, telling me it's "filthy". Pissed off, I told him to put it back, that it was only 5k miles old, did not need replacement, and that the car was sold and on its way to be delivered to the new buyer. The little pimple farmer had the balls to tell me that I was ripping off the buyer, and that I didn't take care of my cars! I had to be held back from kicking his ass right there, I was seeing red.

Anyway, thought you guys might like to hear about my experiences with Jiffy Lube. These were 2 different Jiffy Lubes 300 miles and 7 years apart, btw. From other people that I have talked to, they're also infamous for not replacing crush washers and not tightening oil filters, leading to small leaks to engine failures. Avoid them like the evil plague they are!

Jiffy Lube killed my father.

Really? Yet another reason not to do business with them.

I left him in the waiting room, went to the bathroom, came out, and they'd ripped his air filter out.

They were making costly mistakes 15 years ago when I used to work in that business (at a real shop), and I am quite certain they are still doing the same. Realistically, most dealer service departments offer quick-change lube service now. If you don't want to do it yourself, take it there. Or, if you have a trusted mechanic like I do, take it there. I can't show up on a whim, but I can make an appointment in advance and be in and out of there in under an hour with a fresh oil change and tire rotation.

I know someone whose car was run without oil at jiffy lube. Years later I don't think they've settled for the cost of a new engine. They tried to claim running it with no oil didn't cause any damage.

The sad truth is that 90% of places like jiffy lube have horrible service because the people that work there have absolutely no formal education. Midas is the same way. There are exceptions, but I still wont trust anyone with my car, especially after the trouble I've had in the past with these idiots.

That's the gist of it. Many people assume that because they're working on your car they hvae some sort of training and make some sort of money - that assumption is pretty much completely wrong, and minimum wage isn't generally motivation to do a good job. My old boss went there once and they forgot to put his oil cap back on :disgust:

I went to one, and they overinflated my tires on one side. They were 43psi instead of 33 on the right, making the car lean left. I thought it was the alignment, but no, it was Jiffy lube retards.

How much they are being paid does not reduce their liability. Perhaps if we change the tort laws so that employees can be sued in such situations, they'd find their motivation after all, eh?

I took my Spec to jiffy lube once and they didn't put the oil cap back on.

And when i 1st got my truck in 2000 i took it to a Penzoil place and they told me my airfilter was dirty and that i had sludge in my engine, and that they could take off the oil pan and clean it for me. I looked at them quizickly and asked how they new this, as my truck had 3,000 miles on it, and they hadn't even checked the oil.
Man sometimes I think opening a oil change place would be the best way to make money, open it in the middle of the wealthiest areas, that way the rich people that don't know crap about cars and are always in a hurry will say yes to everything. Then I can charge them $40 for an air filter , $15 for the special oil filter their car requires, and $30 for new windshield wipers. I'm all about making $100 for 20 minutes work.
