RANT: I hate my job

OK. QUickly. I'm a software engineer. I'm interested in embedded systemtype work. I have experience though. I understand htat hte economy isn't so hot, so fine, I'll deal with the IT projects I got stuck on for the past year.

Currently, I am on two IT projects. One is just sorta busy work.

For the second IT project, we had a meeting today. Turns out this is going to last till 2007 and I might be full time on it. And in 2007, "phase 2" starts. I could be on this boring piece of sh!t project for up to FIVE YEARS! I can not stand IT work. Web pages SUCK. They are boring to me. I can't stand it.

I think I have had it. If my wife wern't pregnant, I'd be quitting today. I am totally fed up. I have no motivation to write my resume, however I am getting VERY close to breaking down and doing a resume. I can not stand IT and I am fed up with the BS work I am doing at my employer.

I am very close to just simply quitting and going to the local gas station to gain employment there. I'd be equally entertained there.

I HATE MY JOB!

wow you sound like a real go-getter even if you quit this one. I'm sure tons of people will hire you after you quit !

Seriously though... go back to school and figure out what you want to do with your life. It's obvious computer work isn't it cause it's all boring unless you have a passion for it in the first place.

BOO!!!

The man is ranting, let him do so. IT work is an act of attrition in a corporate environment, and almost anyone with experience will say the same thing. It drains you, and especially so if you got into IT out of an interest in the actual work itself.

I empathize with you. It can get better, but you'll need to change. I quit my corporate development job about 4 years ago, went to a smaller consulting company, and then started my own. That was the only way I could stay in the business. There are options, so don't do anything irrational.

Good luck!

By happy that your actually employed.

Lots of people out there still looking for work.

Work there till you find something more you like.

Do you HAVE to stay there till the end of the project if you find a better employment opportunity?

How much motivation does it take to write a damn resume? Resumes takes like an hour to write..

I know a guy who felt the same way you do, though... He graduated from UF with high honors in electrical engineering and then attended an exclusive internship during the summer at Intel. Then, he decided he hated engineering and all things engineering and is now at UF getting an english degree. To each his pwn..

I worked in the IT environment before I started working as an Engineer and would NEVER go back to that work. I had to deal with way too many stupid people. Plus, it is way too flooded with all the "paper" mcse's out there.

yea dude be happy. atleast you can get the bills paid. it took me 4 months to find a job out of college, and until then I was making minimum wage + tips at a grocery store that I had worked at for about 8 years, ever since I was in highschool. i felt like such a loser bagging groceries with a college degree. but finally i got a job, and so far its great!

don't worry, be happy.

Go listen to "Don't Worry, Be Happy".

You have a job, be thankful. Everyone knows it's easier to find a job once you have a job, so don't quit. Just write a resume, send it out, and see if you get any bites.

I've been totally dis-illusioned. I can't believe the suck I am stuck in. There is no chance in hell I am going back to school. Thank god I chose engineering because it tought me to think. You know what I've discovered. Working for soneone else is a total waste of time.

Gettting a masters in Computer Science is about illogical as it gets. The technology changes to quickly. Moron business minions at large companies like mine don't know that though. They just think a piece of paper is important though and make it important in terms of raises/promotions.

As for being a go getter. My work ethic is not of question. I enjoy software development, but IT work is not embedded systems. It's a totally different world. It's like telling a realtor to go sell appliances at Sears for several years.

I won't quit. I've learned that lesson in my past. But in hindsight though, it's the best thing I ever did. That's another story for another day.

I seriously abhor the "be happy that you <insert some complacent remark here>." Yes, that polyanna view can always be expressed; if you have a crappy job, then at least you have one. If you don't have a job, then at least you're alive. Everything is positive until you're six feet under.

If you have a problem in your life, then fix it. Rationalizing poor situations by comparing yourself to others only elicits complacence.

Resumes take much longer than an hour, especially if you want ot find a job.

As for your friend. Sorry to hear about going to Intel. I've heard that place sucks. All their good people quit long ago and moved to AMD. Odd how AMD is so much better now 😉 he jsut went ot the wrong employer.

My wife and in-laws both think I should be a math teacher. I've thought about it, but I can not stand people that lack discipline and kids these days lack discpline. That's what is preventing me from making that move.

ARGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. I need to find a way out of this sh!t hole

I do understand how software development is different then IT work. I've done both, and now have more experience in IT. My solution was to find something which does both. Unix System Administration. I code to my heart's content (system scripting) while also do administration (ie, IT)

But my solution isn't for everyone. I hope one day you find something which truly makes you happy

I was reading it as a rant until the part where he mentioned he doesn't even have motivation to write his resume... then I had no more sympathy.

Coding is Coding. No matter which way you look at it.

Web pages could be considered as web development if you use the right technologies 😉

I guess I read "I cannot stand IT" wrongly then... would be my mistake.

be a calculus teacher. i remember most students in my cal class back in hs were over achievers plus cal wasn't a requirement to pass hs so you know students in there are serious about college and many are trying to get ahead (by taking ap exams.

Man, i have to do this. Rrrrrrrrr. I'm always "not in the mood" to do it becasue I'm so damn frustrated with work. I enjoy my weekends off, etc. And when it comes down to content, I don't want to list half of the stuff because it's IT and I don't care to discuss it in interviews. Well, that project. I didn't do much. Wrote some javascript. tested it. Not much to say. It's mindless work. But hte thing is, I have to list that stuff as filler. And it's been so long since I did real embedded work, I'd be tongue twisted half during an interview. I really feal like I'm up the creek without a paddle sometimes.

I mean, it's so bad that I wake up i nthe morning depressed. I've driving half way to work before and considered just not showing up. Soemtimes, after I park my car and walk toward the building, I feal like vomiting. And these thing have happened to me and in most cases, multiple times.

EXACTLY! And some work is XML. That's basiacally like taking inventory to me. Wow, there are 5 red pens and two blue pens in my top drawer. The middle drawer contains 9 pencils. Yayyyy. It really feals like work a secretary could do sometimes.

how''s everything going at home ? You're about to become a father ... doesn't this at least even things out in your head ? You make it out to sound like your life is falling apart because of this job. It's a job... not everyone likes it and not everyone changes the world while doing it.

Who knows, after the kid pops out, maybe you will enjoy the stress-free mindless environment at work.
