Oh, I hate It, I HATE IT, I HATE IT, I HATE IT.

I work nights in an "IT Service Center." I pretty much just do monitoring. Sit there, watch computers, and when one goes down....wake up someone. I hate it. 8 hour and 12 hour shifts. I don't do anything. Nothing.

"But Keyser, in this economy, you have a job." -- Well yeah, but I don't sleep at ALL. I'm on prescription medication just to sleep normally during the day, and I still dont' get more than 4 hours of sleep each day. Then go in for 12 hour shifts. DAMN, I HATE IT.

"But Keyser, you're getting experience." -- Yeah, great, with what? Something I don't even enjoy? I know in this economy beggers CAN NOT be choosers, but I literally SUFFER. The lack of sleep kills me. If I could even SLEEP, it would be 10 times better than it is.

"But Keyser, why did you ACCEPT the job?" -- I was told verbally over the phone that I would be working Second Shift. Nothing in writing, so nothing to dispute.

"In the meantime Keyser, why don't you start looking for another job?" -- The weekdays, I can't. I'm too busy TRYING to sleep, I don't do anything else. The weekends, I'm always taking care of things. Literally my week is GONE.

I don't talk to anyone, I just sit there alone. I can't hang out with friends anymore, because I work nights. I can't go on weekend trips because I work Friday Nights. I've lost weight because I now have an abnormal apetite.

Not looking for sympathy, just wanting to Rant.

Thanks for listening if you did. I know things will get better, they always do. But on a day like today, where I only slept for three and a half hours (And laid in bed for over seven), I just get very annoyed. And I know this post is very incoherent, I'm just angry right now, that's all.

form a union and demand that you monitor at the same time the day person monitors

(how could you hate a job where they pay you to do nothing?!)

Yeah, I don't do anything.

So, at first....I thought this would be GREAT because I could read up and eventually earn some certifications, right? Man, I can't read and retain a damn thing at 4 in the morning, due to my lack of sleep. I'm pretty much worthless for getting anything productive done.

are you allowed to read? (I assume so) -- why not further your education, either formally or informally, so you can get the hell out of there into saomething that satisfies you? :)

Man, I've tried this. But like my post above you says, I can't do anything. I can get about an hour or two in before I crack. I try to write some basic programs and stuff during the downtimes, but I really can't concentrate that much. All I can do is read web articles and tutorials and stuff. Yeah, it's something, but nearly as productive as I would LIKE to be.

Then it's time to take a risk -- think really hard about what type of environment would make you happy and then claw your way there!

I've got pretty much the exact same job (I work 2nd shift, 3pm-11pm), and it's getting to me too. I've been looking for jobs in the Raleigh/Durham area, I think I'm just gonna move there in month or so regardless of the job situation. Hard to interview when you live 10 hours away.

Actually, I'd almost love to be working my ass off in the middle of the night. Maybe not at night, but I kinda wish I did SOMETHING meaningful.

Well, if that's your first real job, you're in better shape than I was.

My first real job was at an adult shop. I had grave yard too. We were opened 23 hours a day. Sometimes after 2pm, I'd lock up and just sleep behind the counter for a few hours. Then open again around 6am.

A couple of times a buddy who broke up with his gf and didn't have anything to do but feel blue came over with beer and we'd hit the bottles till we passed out. Sometimes he'd handle the customers when I was too drunk to do so. I never complained. I was making money. Even saw some good looking chicks come in to buy stuff, but mostly men.

Grave yard is good when no one's looking over your shoulders.
