I went to my college's political science department this morning, and asked the secretary about meeting with the department chair. I'm applying for an internship that requires a recommendation from my department head or dean (I'm a polisci major), so I wanted to meet with him and talk about securing it.
Before I could even get the words out of my mouth, some prof comes over and starts talking my ear off about how I can get credit for it, and how I can talk to an internship advisor about doing all sorts of other applications and how the district court in D.C. is a great internship too because they deal with administrative law blah blah blah blah blah. I'm not even applying for a court internship.
So, I kept saying, "Well, it'd be nice to get course credit for this internship, but I have to apply for it first, and one of the requirements is that I need a letter from the department chair." And yet, in this 15-minute conversation, I learned NOTHING about how I could secure this letter of recommendation. I'm sure the secretary could have helped me, but this prof took it upon herself to completely obliterate any semblance of helpfulness in my contact with her.
Look lady: I know what I need to apply for this internship. I need a letter from the department chair. The app is due October 31, and the internship doesn't start until May, 2005. I have plenty of time to work out credit. All I want is the damn letter. Yet I left the office without having an appointment with the department chair.
I think I'll go back tomorrow morning and explain to the secretary exactly what I need and just hope that the same prof isn't hanging around butting into everyone's business.
