Rant: I can't stand people that print so much crap

Well as some of you may know I work in the computer labs here on campus. I pretty much just sit around and make sure that nothing goes wrong. Well the computer labs here are not small and are high volume.

Right now there are 58 jobs in the queue (between two HP LaserJet 8100s) that are all being delayed because someone is printing off an enormous PDF file that prints about 1 page every minute or so.

I have also found that people that print off entire textbooks annoy the piss out of me. Not to mention people that print 250 copies of the same damn thing. Just the other day some user printed the entire math textbook. Approximately 1200 pages and they didnt even use duplex printing. Now where in the hell are you going to store 1200 pages?

What bugs me even more is when one person prints these enormous files everyone else gets pissed because they have to wait. I get to here complaints like: "I am late for class and this needs to be turned in now." Well, what the hell do you want me to do about it? Pull it out of my @ss. Next time you won't wait until last minute to print.

Sorry for the rant, but I am pissed now.

there should definitely be a shorter time limit as to how long the print jobs are allowed to take.

Does the lab charge for printing? It should.

The lab is large and only has two printers? Wow, what if one goes down?

It's their own fault for not having their own computer, really. My old college is doing away with labs and forcing all students to have a computer.

It seems you are easily annoyed. For a job where you "pretty much just sit around and make sure that nothing goes wrong", you complain a lot. A job working with people requires - you should expect - complaining.

If you are trying to tell us 'people are selfish', we already knew that. :)

You definitely need to start charging for anything over say 5-10 pages. Or if you see a moron printing 1200 pages just cancel the job and revoke their printing privelages for the day.

The lab I am currently working in contains about 105 computers. It is either the largest or second largest lab on campus of the more than 50 we have. There is never a problem with the lab having only two computers unless someone decides to print huge files. Everyone pays a "Technology Fee" in their tuition which means all the printing you want.

Each job is given ten minutes and then after ten minutes it can be cancelled. However, it is a pain in the @ss to cancel a job because I have to call the central office and have them do it because all the menus are locked. The printer menus had to be locked because jack@ss students decided they didnt want to wait so they would just cancel all jobs until their job came out.

Yes I can be easily annoyed, but today I am just in a bad mood. I am stuck here at work when I should be at home for Easter break.

Change the print priority on some machines, get some sort of organization in that room.
Or if you are not authorized to do that, kick back, put your feet up and laugh.
Your job is not that important or stressful in the least.

I see . . . ;)

No overtime, huh?

My whole point was to take it easier . . . your job is not so serious so as to be causing you stress. Actually a job is a form of "slavery" - it is supposed to be "work" and not "fun" (although the careers we choose should be giving us satisfaction). I imagine you CHOSE to work today (work sucks but we need the bucks).

If the school started charging 5-10 cents per page, 1200 page print jobs wouldn't be a problem anymore. That's what they did at my school, technology fees be damned.

I've been in a similar situation, I used to work in the computer labs on a college campus. What was annoying was that people that would print 200 pages would sometimes not even bother to pick them up. Also, if there was a delay in printing, they would keep sending it to the printer 10 times over, which made things worse and would lock up the queue.

LOL! I used to do that all the time in my Comp Sci class..we would have to turn in a print out of our code by the end of the class period. Me and my friend would each print like 500 blank pages and just sit there chucklin like assholes..lol

Sounds like this person was working the system for a free textbook. In *this* case, the system's to blame -- there will be the abusers and the non-users, battling over whether to keep (or even lower!) or revoke this technology fee. My old school had a per page print account tied to your bursar that worked really well, and the lab folks were given permissions to handle the print queues instead of having to bug someone buildings away.

Hehe. If you had a XEROX network laser printer, you could do job interrupt and promotion right from the printer. :p

That would pose a problem like I mentioned above though.
