Rant: Glossy laptop surfaces

They suck. Hard. As if a glossy lid and sides aren't enough (I don't mind glossy screens), we have laptops with glossy palmrests. What were they thinking? I don't want a freaking disco mirror for a palmrest that also serves as a fingerprint and scratch magnet, most importantly they are uncomfortable to use; it sticks like a weak glue to the hand and it feels horrible.

This is retarded trend and must stop. It's not like matte surfaces are more expensive to use; it's still freaking molded plastic after all. And while we at it, death to ALPS touchpads.

I noticed that HP had success with their glossies a few years back and now Dell is doing the glossy on their home line.

Whatever sells is what's made.

Glossy screens are near impossible to see in a room with lots of windows on a sunny day. 😡

The other surfaces seem to wear out too fast too. Better materials are needed to show less wear. Some of the cheapies show finish degradation in a just a few weeks of normal workday use.

That's why I love my Envy 14. The only glossy part of the laptop is the edge-to-edge "glass" over the screen, and the screen gets bright enough to overcome most glare (except direct sunlight). Windows and overhead lights are no problem at all. Metal surfaces = no fingerprint smudges to clean up.

Just bought an Acer 4741G...No glossy surfaces except for the screen, and the build quality and specs (i3 2.53GHz, GT420m) is excellent for a 14" $600 laptop. Kinda funny to think its Acer that can actually pull this off.

Shiny to catch the eye in stores?

You think glossy palm rests are bad? My Hannspree notebook has a glossy touchpad. OMFG it is terrible. Also, it is right against the space bar, so as you type every time you hit space your cursor moves to where your arrow is.

i'm pretty happy with the macbook air. but i tend to not work outside - the weather is too extreme for my tastes.

. . . it is right against the space bar, so as you type every time you hit space your cursor moves to where your arrow is.

That happens to me with any notebook. I rest my hands on that area while typing, so I disable the touchpad and use a mouse. 🙂
