I have to say, the Dallas ones are pretty damn bright. If it's not a well lit area and they have them on, they're nearly blinding. I understand that police have a dangerous job and visibility is important, but on a clear night, I fell like they could be toned down a bit and still be just as effective.

Those LEDs are bright enough to literally burn your retinas. Don't look directly at them at all

Oh, and for the OP:

1. Grow up
2. Stop ninja-editting your posts so you don't look stupid.
3. If a cop approaches with his lights on, get the hell over. If he sits next to you, PULL over.

1. cool
2. Never ninja edited it, I stated I re wrote it, and it was just to simplify what I was trying to say
3. He had his lights on the whole time from getting on the highway and then he just chilled, he was obviously not rushing to someplace or on call. When the rain calmed down he turned it off, so I think he was just using it for more light.

If he was on a call he would have the siren sound on, he only had the lights. And he never got behind me and I slowed down 25mph below the speed limit as per the "Move over law" , I was all the way in the left lane he was in the center lane.

post #28 and 29 are right on what I am trying to say.

I understand they need to be bright but, if your eyes are focused to just your headlights for light then you have these bright ass lights, its just very irritating.

It was a simple rant people took way too serious. I guess People think I am making fun of FHP or something. I am just talking about the LED lights they use.

Flashing blue lights don't exactly make driving in the rain easier..

If he was on a call he would have the siren sound on
Not necessarily.

I'm having a hard time figuring out how he was next to you for so long if you were doing 25mph under the posted speed limit. I don't know anyone who will run code down a highway going that slowly...

I think people are thinking that you shouldn't be surprised that they're bright, because they're supposed to mean "See me? From way far away? OK good, now GTFO of the way." :p

^ it was raining very heavily, maybe he was leaching off my headlights too. But he rolled next to me for a bit then got in front of me.

When the rain went to a drizzle compared to how hard it was raining, he just turned them off.

meh, w/e

Look at the package for a 0.3W or higher LED flashlight. You'll find a warning not to look directly at the LED emitter.

Ours are like that as well. They are bright enough that we partially cover them during checkpoints to keep from blinding ourselves.

I was under the impression that most all consumer-grade LED emitters are not bright enough to actually damage your eye unless you force yourself to stare at them. For instance, I've always read that the eye has the reflex to blink and look away if staring into one that's too bright.

I checked on Wikipedia, and they state:

Safety
The vast majority of devices containing LEDs are "safe under all conditions of normal use", and so are classified as "Class 1 LED product"/"LED Klasse 1". At present, only a few LEDs—extremely bright LEDs that also have a tightly focused viewing angle of 8° or less—could, in theory, cause temporary blindness, and so are classified as "Class 2".[73] In general, laser safety regulations—and the "Class 1", "Class 2", etc. system—also apply to LEDs.[74]

So unless you get right up close to them and force yourself to stare at them, your eyeballs are safe.
