No they aren't.

USED to be practical and functional. Now they are something with which to showoff. Mercedes? Lexus? BMW? Lincoln? Cadillac? And now, Porsche??? Come on!
I'll agree that a full-size truck or an SUV makes sense in some cases, those numbers have dwindled greatly in relation to their sales. Do you honestly think someone plopping down $50k is going to risk getting the carpet dirty? No way! And kids, jet skis, etc. can all be hauled easily by most mid-size and larger sedans while getting at least 50% better gas mileage (often double). I should know, I've done all of that, myself. Heck, I've even hauled a 15' Willow tree in my convertible before! And just brought home two 10' antenna masts with it the other day and I get double the mileage of an Excursion/Suburban and 50% more than an Exhibition or Tahoe. And, I use road manners as best I can. I signal every turn and lane change. I keep my distance from the vehicle in front. I'll check onramps as I approach and let a vehicle merge in or I move to the left lane if room permits. Yes, there are some SUV drivers that do the same but, in my observations over the last three years, those numbers are very small.
And, yes, I could afford one if I wanted, two in fact. But I have no desire to add to the plethora of Stupid Useless Vehicles on the road sucking up fuel like it's going out of style.
