I found Deus Ex: Invisible War (Deus Ex 2) at the local EB for ten bucks (Canadian!) used. Now, I loved the original DX - wicked-cool open ended gameplay, multiple paths all over the place ... it just rocked.
So I bought DX2, brought it home, and prepared for conspiracy ++ and backstabbing all over the place.
This game is the absolute worst port I have ever seen. And I've played the PC version of Halo. Now, my system isn't exactly cutting edge, but have a look:
Athlon XP @ 2.2GHz on nForce2
512MB Corsair XMS @ 400MHz (2-3-3-6)
Radeon 9500 Pro @ 300/600 (Cat 4.7)
Even at 640x480, with NO EYE CANDY, it barely scrapes up a 45fps minimum. In a firefight? Forget it - 20fps for you! What the bloody hell kind of piss-poor coding hackjob was this? Looking at the INI files shows a few hundred lines of Xbox-specific garbage! To add to the fun, the sound has more static than my grandfather's B&W set with rabbit-ears, doesn't support more than two speakers, and has no hardware accelleration. I can't understand WTF is being said at all!
So, I google for a patch. Hey, DXIW 1.2 patch. *apply* Says it fixes performance issues. Neato. *run game* Hey, I can turn up the details to "High" now. Wonder if I can increase the resolu-*CHUG ... CHUG* - guess not. 640x480 or death. And STILL the bloody sound issues!
Out comes Google again to search for tweaks. Ion Storm's forums have all sorts of whining about how "oMgz my Sy5t3m is t3h f@st3st eV4h" and a boatload of worthless tripe from a "foreign game developer" - and amid all the muck, a user-created third-party sound driver. Download that, and poof - no more crackle. But ... where did the rest of my sound effects go?
So, yeah. I'm glad I didn't pay full retail for this, that's for sure. Anyone else who owns this game care to chime in with any tidbits, war stories, or maybe even "How I managed to successfully emulate the Xbox on a PC well enough to get this steaming pile of ass to run properly"?
