RANT- DX:IW as "Worst Game Ever", and I only paid $10.

I found Deus Ex: Invisible War (Deus Ex 2) at the local EB for ten bucks (Canadian!) used. Now, I loved the original DX - wicked-cool open ended gameplay, multiple paths all over the place ... it just rocked. :D So I bought DX2, brought it home, and prepared for conspiracy ++ and backstabbing all over the place.

This game is the absolute worst port I have ever seen. And I've played the PC version of Halo. Now, my system isn't exactly cutting edge, but have a look:

Athlon XP @ 2.2GHz on nForce2
512MB Corsair XMS @ 400MHz (2-3-3-6)
Radeon 9500 Pro @ 300/600 (Cat 4.7)

Even at 640x480, with NO EYE CANDY, it barely scrapes up a 45fps minimum. In a firefight? Forget it - 20fps for you! What the bloody hell kind of piss-poor coding hackjob was this? Looking at the INI files shows a few hundred lines of Xbox-specific garbage! To add to the fun, the sound has more static than my grandfather's B&W set with rabbit-ears, doesn't support more than two speakers, and has no hardware accelleration. I can't understand WTF is being said at all!

So, I google for a patch. Hey, DXIW 1.2 patch. *apply* Says it fixes performance issues. Neato. *run game* Hey, I can turn up the details to "High" now. Wonder if I can increase the resolu-*CHUG ... CHUG* - guess not. 640x480 or death. And STILL the bloody sound issues!

Out comes Google again to search for tweaks. Ion Storm's forums have all sorts of whining about how "oMgz my Sy5t3m is t3h f@st3st eV4h" and a boatload of worthless tripe from a "foreign game developer" - and amid all the muck, a user-created third-party sound driver. Download that, and poof - no more crackle. But ... where did the rest of my sound effects go?

So, yeah. I'm glad I didn't pay full retail for this, that's for sure. Anyone else who owns this game care to chime in with any tidbits, war stories, or maybe even "How I managed to successfully emulate the Xbox on a PC well enough to get this steaming pile of ass to run properly"?

Edit - Now with 40% more Poll Option Biomod

You need an option for disliking it for both the horrid coding and the asstacular plot.

The game was a disaster. It has almost no support for ATI cards since it was developed for XBox simultaneously, not to mention that the whole game has really been "dumbed down". I don't care what IS says, they dumbed it down, pure and simple. What the f%$# else do you call "Universal Ammo"?

Even worse is how they somehow took the Unreal engine -- which this game is supposedly based off of -- and made it un-moddable. HOW THE F%$# DO YOU DO THAT!?!? Modding Unreal is the coding equivalent of cutting butter. Whatever they did, they f%$#ed up horridly.

it ran fine on mine, 2.2 ghz p4, 512mb ram, radeon 9800 pro.

But the original was sooooo cool. I had more fun replaying DX1 than the first time through DX2. They should have just updated the graphics of the original.

You need another option.
I disliked it because of the game itself AND the poor ass coding.
It sucks.
AND: They didn't release it in the UK until about 5 months after the US release, and it STILL ran like crap.

I'm glad I didn't pay anything for it. Ion Storm, you suck. You suck more than Microsoft. You suck more than AOL. You suck like Daikatana sucked. You suck HARD.

Most intelligent post ever.

You'll find they took the world of the first game and perverted it horribly. Not only that, the characters that spill over from the last game have changed drastically as well. I found myself screaming at the computer, "what the f%$#, there's no way in hell <so and so> would ever do that!"

Oh, additional interesting bit of information: you never swim in the game. Ever. There's no water. Their coding was so horrible they couldn't get swimming down.

By the way, my specs (when I played the game):

AMD Athlon 2400+
1 Gig 3200 ram (generic, but performs well)
Radeon 9600 with Omega Drivers, overclocked as far as its little circuits would go

At 800x600 I got at most 24fps. Turning on full details for everything (except shadows) dinged me a whopping 2fps. 2x Anti-aliasing didn't seem to matter either. (4x did though)
At 640x480 I got about 40fps, but it would drop to 20-15 in combat. Since it did the same thing at 800x600 I thought I'd just stick with the higher resolution.

Deus Ex 2 was a pretty crappily coded game, i'll give you that.

But leave it to people to roll out the red carpet for the console where they will make a killing as opposed to letting it get downloaded by all the kazaa n00bs and script kiddies.

If someone drove a dumptruck full of money up to your house and said "Make this look awsome on X-Box" . . . .

Yeah I think you get my point.

Yeah, but what's the point in taking a good Xbox game and going "Okay, now we're going to do an ass-poor port to crap all over the equally massive if not larger PC gamer crowd and make them hate us"?

Edit - Oh, and it just ate my saves consisting of about four hour's play, pushing me back to the WTO terminal. :|
