From the Lenovo Thinkpad site:
All Genuine Windows Vista operating systems include Service Pack 1.
- Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic [Included]
- Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium [add $41.65]
- Genuine Windows Vista Business with Windows XP Professional Downgrade**** [add $67.15]
- Genuine Windows Vista Business [add $67.15]
- Genuine Windows Vista Business 64 [add $67.15]
- Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate with Windows XP Professional Downgrade**** [add $126.65]
- Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate [add $126.65]

Yeah, it's been around for awhile but now the price has gotten higher. Earlier this year, I paid $25 for the priviledge of accepting "less." Now it looks like you still get Vista but you also get a copy of XP?

PS - Can't link to it because it is a shopping cart
PPS - Where is my Linux selection?

Corporate environments change slower. A lot of companies are still using Windows 2000.

Yes, in fact it did. XP was a joke until SP2 was released.

In the licensing agreement of Vista, I'm pretty sure you can legally downgrade to XP and it will be considered a valid license. However, your vista key will not work, you'd need an XP key.

But if you're buying this yourself, and it's not a company laptop, use vista. It's plenty good.

Its not good if your company's applications don't run in Vista. Not sure how common this is, but I have to keep an XP machine around for engineering applications for my college classes.

I work for the University of Georgia and we aren't allowed to purchase vista because our IT department will not support it.

Umm... maybe I'm wrong but those prices look the same to me? Both Vista Business options are the same prices, one just comes with XP downgrade, same with the Vista Ultimate.

When we get vista systems in we just image em to XP.

I love Love Vista but its just too much of a pain in the ass for companies to switch to, and does not offer any real improvements for the user.

Also, at a friend's university the wireless authentication program does not work on Vista. All the people with Vista computers have to do without network access unless they can find a wired connection.
