Rant: Don't HDD manufacturers take into consideration that you're running a RAID 1 when processing an RMA?

Seriously, normally this wouldn't be much of a complaint but if you're running some kind of disk system other than a single drive, it can be a bit of a problem. Idiots.

1. Go to FS/FT
2. Get someone to buy a brand new 200GB, trade you for 300GB
3. Put your new 200GB in RAID
4. .......
5. Profit!

That's just a waste of time, energy and money. Was hoping to set up a mirror tonight, not next week.

Can't you still use it in a RAID setup. You just won't be using all of the available disc space.

Well since you went through the RMA process with the mfg'r, I'm assuming that took more than a few days or a week. If you're in that much of a hurry, you should've kept backup drives on hand, a few more days or a week very likely isn't going to be a problem.

I don't see what the big deal is then. He'll only get to use 200GB but that's what he wanted anyway.

just kinda forces the OP to want to sell the 200gb on FS/FT and get another 300gb and have a 300gb RAID 1 array :)
that'd be the best idea

No it doesn't force ANYTHING. You only lose when you think that you need 2x300gbs now. IF you imagine your 300gb as a 200gb, then you're fine. You lost NOTHING. You only gained potential.

Now the 300gb might be slower. I guess you could say that's a loss, but yea..

You're complaining about getting 100 GB for free. You could easily sell this brand new hard drive and make some profit.

Here, if you're so pissed off by it, send the hard drive to me and I'll send you a 200GB drive.

Just use the 300 and the controller will "make it" a 200.

Probably not ideal but if you need the mirror yesterday it just may have to do. :)

It's a complete waste of 100GBs and MAY perform irratically depending on the controller. I don't want to risk that. Anyway I just ordered another 300GB from ZZF : )

Reason for not wanting to use FS forum for hard drives is that these things fail out of the blue. I'd want a reseller or a manufacturer warranty just to be sure.

Then why not sell the new 300gb and buy a new 200gb?

Why not refresh old drives with new ones?
