Recount of trying to get a VRM to add 2nd cpu to new 1400SC server

Alright, that was downright painful. Think I'd rather have a root canal than call Dell Support again. Over an hour and a half, being transferred several times, usually to the wrong place, and dealing with people who have difficulty speaking and understanding english.

Wouldn't it make sense to note on the page for the 1400SC (and other servers I imagine) that this VRM is required to add second processor and make it available for ordering during original build? What if I ordered second CPU after the fact from Dell, would VRM be included, or would it be same painful process? I assume if ordered 2nd CPU at time of original build, they would have to include VRM, otherwise it wouldn't POST.

I am very disappointed in Dell, especially their sales and support organizations. So now I have a server that will sit dormant another week awaiting a part that should have been there in the first place, for which I had to pay full price rather than discounted, but at least got them to waive shipping. Sorry guys, Compaq and Gateway got you beat hands down.

***

Unbelievable!!! So I get the part for which they refused to honor the 15% discount currently available, let alone the 20% I had at time of server order, and it's a refurbished part. That's illegal. I was charged for a new part and not notified that I would be receiving used. Way to go, Dell. Expect a call from my State's Attorney's office.

Gateway, IMO, has been the only decent computer distributor to deal with so far.

Dell is awful, but low-priced, never upgradeable, oddly configured, and totally limited.

Compac is same as dell.

Micron is nice, but WAY overpriced.

HP is same as compac even before they merged.

I ordered a Compaq ML-350 server for my employer. 1 P3 CPU, 512 MB ECC RAM, 3 19.2 GB SCSI HDD RAID 5 etc. After getting the rig set up and running (Novell NetWare 5.x) I decided that I wanted the extra CPU. Called my distributed and had the CPU and VRM in two days. They even sent out a tech to install and configure. Server is humming along nicely with no bad. Very easy to deal with. Now, I did not go directly with Compaq, but through a certified VAR. I know this makes a difference. Just my .02.
