I just called my friendly American Family Insurance agent inquiring about my next payment, when it's due, how much, etc.

My car insurance is going up slightly because I had 2 cars insured (my 94 Toyota Corolla which I sold last year and my current 2002 Honda Accord). Since I am only insuring 1 car now I don't get the multi-vehicle discount.

And my renter's insurance is going up to $141/yr for $16,000 coverage ... the only reason I have rental insurance is because 1) I get a discount of 20% combined with my auto and 2) it's nice to have renter's insurance in case something happens and my roommate's homeowner's insurance doesn't come through.

My 2002 Honda Accord SE's premium was $473.20/6 mo, who knows how high it will go now.

Wait. So it was cheaper to have 2 cars than 1? Or are you complaining about the insurance on the one car left going up?

I dunno, I'm confused my next payment is due 3/29/2003 and it should be less since it's only 1 car not 2 cars.

Either I confused him, or he confused me, or we're both idiots.

It's not less. The total for the two cars is more. But with two cars the payment on each car is less because you get a multi-car discount with most agencies.

Rossman...I hear ya!! You must have a pretty good driving record to have a low premium like that. I pay approximately 68/month for full coverage on my 2002 Chevy Impala LS.

I ditched American Family a while back because they kept jacking up my rates about 50 bucks every year.
That really pissed me off becaue I have a totally clean driving record. So I did some research on the net and Found a Company Wisconsin Mutual who will only cover drivers that have a prestine driving record like mine. My rates have stayed the same for 2 years now.

I Suggest you do the same thing.

Shop around. American Family bases their premiums more on credit score than on actual risk. If your credit isn't perfect, then they aren't for you. Personally, I go through a broker and use Progressive for the cars and Safeco for the house. Getting a pretty good deal, I think. Dropped a couple tickets off my MVR last year and my car insurance is down to record low levels (for me :p ).
Anyway, insurance premiums have been going up since 9/11. Some people with Farmers have seen their home insurance premiums more than double.

When I went from 2 cars to 1 my insurance went up.

They have formulas that depend strongly on the number of miles driven. If you claim less than 6000 miles on each car, then you get a dramatic discount. But then when switching to just 1 car, I could no longer claim under 6000 miles, so the insurance skyrocketed. Plus I lost the mulitple car discount.

They get these formulas from a big average of statistics. Quite often the cars that are driven under 6000 miles are showcars that people cherish and don't have many insurance claims. When the big companies only look at averages, some of us can easilly fit thorugh the cracks and get good deals. Those deals end when you suddenly drive the car a lot more.

Vic - The ironic part is my credit score is around 634 (could be off a few points) and AmFam's rates are cheaper than the other agencies for me.

What PDX insurance agencies do you recommend?

My insurance premiums have been jacked up pretty good over the last 18 months as well.

Home owners insurance has gone up $200 from $350 a year to $550 a year. My insurance premiums have gone up about $40 a year without adding any tickets or claims.

Oh well. I turn 25 month, and get married a month after that. So that should help :)

Oh, and I live in Iowa and that helps out astronomically as well. Some of the lowest car insurance premiums in the nation.

Heh, I don't doubt that they're cheaper! I gotta call AmFam, your auto premium is like half of mine! But then I still have one more speeding ticket that won't drop off until this fall, then I'll finally have a clean MVR for the first time in more than 10 years.
YGPM :)

I pay just under $2k/yr for insurance on my car ('02 Dakota). But that's mainly because I'm a 24 year old male in California that drive 18,000 miles/year. My record's clean. I noticed that they also decided to reclassify Dakotas as 1/2 ton trucks instead of compacts, last year it only cost me $1,600 :(

Damn must be nice to have that low of a premium. I pay more in 1.5 months than you pay in 6.

Sigh, why did I move up to NY? Oh yeah, I actually had a job there.

vi_edit - You'll definitely be in for a pleasant surprise after you turn 25 and get married. My rates dropped quite a bit.

Vic - Thanks for the PM.

Although my rates are going up slightly, my coverage is amazing I have almost double the OR minimum requirements plus towing, car rental, and about 4 other goodies ... I could save a few bucks by going with the bare minimum but if/when I ever need my car insurance to file a claim I want a lot of coverage, just in case.

Assuming it's cheaper in Phoenix, I would just call and go through a PHX agent to insure my car which is located in Portland, OR?

They wanted $1400/6mo on my 99 Z71 at Allstate, $1500 Statefarm and Farmers/Progressive you don't even want to know. (Perfect record, over 25yrs old)

I just recently got a P.O. box in Saratoga, WY and now pay $918/FULL YEAR. :D

Insurance = 2nd Biggest Legal Theft in the world

Laust, I feel your pain. Here in NY I pay a bit more than that with Met Insurance (company discount available). Granted, I'm 24 and have an almost perfect record (ticket 2 years ago). And I drive a 97 Acura CL. I'm so hoping when I turn 25 in 4 months, the rates go down a lot.

I pay 531 a month for car insurance and 208 every 6 months for 150K of renter's insurance.

Both will be going down eventually because I will be using the same company.

Unfortunately no.

At least it wasn't as bad as my roommates rates. He was paying something to the tune of $4,000+ a year. But then again, he recently came over from England, had less than a years driving, under 25, etc... Hell, quite a few companies even refused to insure him.
