RANT: 600 dollars for books at a community college

i dont know what the hell is wrong w/ community college teachers but the science teachers at my sis cc is friggin on crack! my little sister called me from school saying all the books she needs to buy will run her about 600 bucks...for 3 classes. fvckin ochem alone is 350...250 for the book, solutions manual, and box toy molecules, and another hundred for the lab book. also, the book for her stat class is a little over 100 and her calculus book is around 140. btw...these books are the latest and greatest 'new editions' so no buying used.

i majored in bio at UCSB and my god...these prices are unheard of. my bio books, lab books, and lab fees cost me nomore then 150, physics was like 80-90 bucks, ochem was around 130 for both manual and solutions manual. i can't believe they're making her buy a book for o chem lab??? ochem lab is just a series of experiments...just a simple lab manual would be sufficient.

no offence to cc teachers and all that but wtf do you learn at a cc anyways? they don't even prepare you for crap, it's like sitting through hs all over again. imma go talk to my little sis teachers tomorrow and see what the big deal is, not like they're going to change the curriculum around or anything but i just want to open a can of woopa$$ on them. geez...this is suppose to be a community college, aspiring college students attend cc to save money not end up spending more.

cliff notes: lil sis had to buy really expensive books at community college...

Dude, it's not like the books at UCLA or Harvard or more expensive books than the ones at a community college.

All science/engineering texts are expensive. That's just the way it is.

What I think is a ripoff is that there are so many different choices for a book for a particular class that the books end up being more expensive because of the lower print run and it results in fewer amounts of used books to choose from.

i remember...when i took the gen chem series. my stupid prof made us buy 'upgrade' our editions every quarter...so essentially i bought 3 books that year...damn cost me over 300 bucks for one class. they're still sitting on my bookshelf cause i refuse to throw em out or sellem back for 10% of original value.

the irony is this is a community college. some of my old prof. even tried to help us save money by forking out their money to buy 5 or 10 books and putting them in the reserve book room. some even just straight out photo copy essential sections and making a reader out of it.

A friend of mine just bought her books today for her first semester of nurse anesthetist school. Total tab for books? THREE GRAND polly.

Great googly moogly. :Q

My first qtr at college, I think I spent ~400 on books. Then I tried to sell stuff back, and I learned exactly how little you get. I learned to buy books on half.com and either sell them on half.com once I was done or hold on to them. I have probably ~$1000 worth of textbooks on my bookshelf at home, but they're all mathematics essentials books that I like having around.

you people should really check out addall.com. the books there are often at a steep discount compared to my campus bookstore, and that's comparing new prices to used! oh yea, and i have easily $1.5k on my shelves. but then again i keep all my books.

Interesting...I would have said that about UCSB.

dude, at least none of her classes got cancelled 2 weeks before school starts.

the only class I absolutely need to take this semester gets cancelled, now that sucks.
