Who are the best laptop makers?

I'm thinking of replacing my desktop with a gaming laptop.

So like how does Asus compare to Lenovo compare to Gigabyte to MSI to Acer?

I heard that Lenovo thinkpads are pretty good in terms of quality.

I would probably think they are number 1 or 2.

FWIW my 3 yr old acer "gaming" laptop has been absolutely excellent. it does lack a little oomph though. if you're going gaming laptop, make sure you get enough video card processing power. I believe the mobile graphics cards have improved by leaps and bounds in all areas since my purchase.

Here's my lappy specs:

- 500GB HDD (replaced by SSD)
- 128GB Samsung 830 Series SATA III SSD 2.5” MZ-7PC128B/WW

- 17.3” Display
- Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
- Logitech Wireless Anywhere Mouse MX

Bought it to run WoW at the time, it ran it well....though obviously nowhere near my desktop. Its great for playing games on the go, but can't keep up with the most modern games right now.

If you ask this question to 10 people, you're going to get 10 different lists. Everyone's had different experiences with different manufacturers, models, not to mention widely different usage scenarios.

Alienware is the way to go for gaming laptops. Otherwise go for customized Sony laptops will be good quality for sure.

It really has to do with your usages. I wanted a laptop that could play games, light/portable, and had a really strong battery life. I was looking at an Asus notebook at the time, but the Macbook Pro was $700 cheaper due to lack of raid-0 ssd's even though it had the same CPU, GPU, and similar build quality.

You could get a relatively cheap laptop with a quad i7 haswell and a 7970m/8970m that could kick serious ass. It would have lackluster build quality and poor battery life though.

GPUs are wicked fast in notebooks now and can clock pretty high. The 650m in my notebook easily reaches the desktop GTX 650 in clockspeeds and perfomance.

Notebookcheck often reviews gaming notebooks of all shapes and sizes. They just reviewed an Asus gaming notebook that crushes all the benchmarks, and achieves over 6 hours of battery life on the wifi test.

While the pricing is not accurate on the website, they have quite informative reviews; even if the native german reviews are not properly translated all the time.


Boutique laptop builders are probably your best bet for a good deal. The 7970m/8970m/m290x has the best value by far, but the 780m/880m has better power savings. Definitely go for a haswell i7 in the notebook. AMD cpu's are not competetive in notebooks.

I am set on the gtx 860m because it looks about as fast as my desktop's old gtx 570, while using like 1/4 the power. Asus makes the "republic of gaming" laptop while MSI has the apache line.

I've never owned a laptop to be honest.

One of the reasons has always been laptop doesn't equate gaming in my head, even though I'm not gaming much lately.

In general I'd say this: $$$$ > $$$ > $$ > $.

The normal business series Lenovo Thinkpad, HP Probook, Dell Precision that normally start ~$800+ seem all pretty solid. Other laptops starting at this price point definitely make better models typically when it comes to build quality. If you use a laptop very heavily, I'd just look for a good sale for a business series and call it a day. You get solid features and pretty much the best build quality from the vendor. One side benefit if you choose to get a warranty for these laptops from the vendor they are going to be much better than the consumer versions at around the same price.
