Ranger Alleges Cover-Up in Tillman Case

I did a search for this story and didn't see it posted to the forum yet! 🙂

An Army Ranger who was with Pat Tillman when he died by friendly fire said Tuesday he was told by a higher-up to conceal that information from Tillman's family.

"I was ordered not to tell them," U.S. Army Specialist Bryan O'Neal told the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

He said he was given the order by then-Lt. Col. Jeff Bailey, the battalion commander who oversaw Tillman's platoon.

I wonder what else is being covered up, but of course, the govt doesn't cover up anything, and if they do, is for the good of the people and to 'save our children'!

Sorry, but this is old news.
You can read it in the other Tilman thread.

I believe this is the guy who flew how with Tilman's brother and was told to keep the info from his brother and family.
The goal of the military was to learn the facts before running around and telling the world he was killed by friendly fire.

Plus do you really think it would have done any good to tell them that he was killed by friendly fire right at the start? "Sorry but your brother is dead, and we killed him." ??

Do you have a problem with telling him (and his family) the truth?

Do you think his family feels better, now that they know that they were lied to before getting the truth?

I don't know, but have you ever had to make a decision like that?

I am sure the people in charge were not sure what to do and were going with their 'gut' feelings.

Oh, my fault. Didn't know that was the policy---just tell the family lies about the death and then come back later and say, "sorry but he wasn't actually killed by the enemy, but we killed him.." Furthermore, my friend's family got the news that their son was killed by friendly fire... Do you care to explain why that family was told the simple facts?

Nope, and hopefully I won't ever be in that situation. But better to tell the truth right away.

As to the commanders, at first maybe, but then they delibretly covered it up because of the "bad press" it would get. That is just wrong as well.

Right you are. At first it was just good SOP, but soon enough they began to lie so that wouldn't be the scapegoats. Not likely for caring about "bad press" so much as nobody wanting to give bad news to the Old Man, but it went down like that anyways. Their careers are certainly over, when before it would have been a major A55 Chewing and then just drive on.

Stupidity comes in various flavors.
