When IBM lost Apple alot of people said that they were going down hill and stuff. But I just thought:

The Xbox 360 has an IBM CPU
The PS3 has an IBM CPU
The Wii has an IBM CPU

...how many consoles are sold compared to PCs? Or perhaps Macs?

IBM owns the next generation of consoles.

That was a not-so-random thought by many analysts when apple made the decision to go to intel. 90% of the news articles I read at that time pointed this out. I'm guessing the Console CPU stuff is not a very profitable business for IBM, just a nice way to recoup some of the investment costs and lower manufacturing to help bolster the Power Server business profit.
 
Well, it seemed pretty obvious to me that IBM doesn't even want to be in the personal computing side of the business, so it doesn't seem to be a big loss to them.

I would guess that they'll get just as much out of their console deals as they would have out of Apple. How many Apple computers did they sell, and how many chips will they sell from the 3 consoles combined? I'm not certain of what deal they struck with each company and if they get royalties at all or produce any of the chips themselves, but it could be pretty lucrative.

Also, with the consoles, they design a chip and then they're done, they don't have to keep upping the speed and/or lowering power consumption/heat output. They'll probably do a redesign or two, but I doubt it requires as much continual development as for a PC. They might for Cell, but thats also a chip that will benefit their server business as well.
 
For most companies there's no point competing with Intel. I mean, it's some sort of miracle AMD is able to compete so well against Intel.
 
IBM is also in w/ AMD on SOI.

When all the specs came out for these next gen consoles, I just found it rather amusing that they all were running IBM chips

I wouldn't say it is a miracle. It's a strategic viewpoint and differing opinion on what the market needs that has made AMD somewhat successful. Intel thought a different way and has paid for it by giving up market share.

It's a classic business case of not totally understanding your target market and somebody else understanding them completely.

AMD is actually beating Intel in some places. AMD processors outsold Intel for the first time in home PC's in Q1 of this year.
