so my friend was working on his thesis (about a weeks worth of hard work). the docx file was on his desktop and he proceeded to move it to a folder he had just made called "thesis". he moves the file, but when he opens the folder, the file isn't there. word and finder can't find the file named "thesis.docx". what the hell just happened? it's not in the trash, and it's not in any other folders.
 
Did you try to search via Spotlight?

If so, then the only other suggestion is Time Machine, or possibly grab a file restoration program like "Disk Warrior 4".

I don't know what would've happened though.
