Random system restore?

EvilYoda

So I turn on my PC from sleeping (Windows 7) only to find that all of my files from the last 10 days are gone. It seems like the hard drive (OS on SSD, data on HDD) simply went back to an earlier state and this is driving me crazy - I don't set restore points and have never used that feature on this system. Work, pictures, music, etc.

Any idea what happened? Any recourse?

Restore points don't remove personal files. Only installed programs, registry entries, and Windows files.

Shadow copies if you have backup and restore options turned on are a possibility for recovery. Or you could try some free data recovery software, but you should stop using the computer immediately and access the drive from a different machine to increase the likelihood of success if you have to go that route.

It happened because someone deleted your files, or cloned your drive previously and copied it back over. If you installed any programs recently, you could see if those are present still. If not, then someone cloned your drive previously and copied it back over.
